Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the use of quantitative methods for sociologically relevant research. By the end of this module, you will be able to critically engage with published quantitative sociological research and undertake elementary quantitative data analysis independently. You will be introduced to the use of statistical software for the analysis of large-scale quantitative data. We will build on research design skills acquired in Understanding Social Research last year and we will aim to develop practical research skills related to quantitative methods. Please note that this module does not require any mathematical knowledge and that we will aim to principally focus on substantive understanding of quantitative methods and how they fit within the wider discipline.

Timetabled teaching activities

The module is structured around a 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour lab session (first 4 weeks) / 2-hour seminar (Week 5 onwards). Lectures take place on Mondays from 3.00 - 4.00 at H0.51 (Humanities Building).
