Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module seeks to provide students with an understanding of the role of education in re/producing and/or challenging social inequalities. It takes an intersectional approach, enabling students to engage with the complex ways in which social differences intersect to make a difference in terms of people’s educational opportunities, experiences and outcomes. The module also attends to the ways in which people resist structuring forces through activism, teaching and everyday negotiations and contestations. The content and teaching of the module provide theoretical tools for students to engage critically with educational processes, paying attention to relevant policy making and using a wide range of empirical evidence from research based in schools and higher education contexts. Most of the literature and policy is focused on the UK, but throughout we will draw on examples from other national contexts and also locate our analyses within the contemporary global context.

Timetabled teaching activities

Lectures will take place each Monday between 1-2 pm. The lectures are in MS.04. Seminars will take place as detailed on the undergraduate notice board in the Department of Sociology and on the Department website.
