Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module will provide students with an overview of key thinkers and movements in the tradition of critical social theory. Lectures will introduce theorists and theoretical turns and situate them in relation to historical events and political struggles. The changing conceptualisation of power and class will provide a focus running throughout the module and helping us to see how the different theoretical approaches relate to each other, and to historical and political events.

Timetabled teaching activities

Lectures on Thursdays at 13:00- 14.00 with Virinder Kalra, Akwugo Emejulu and Simone Varriale S0.20 Seminars on Thursdays at H0.02 14:00-1500 and Thursdays 16:00-17:00 in H0.60 In the first week the seminar will be introductory, in subsequent weeks students are required to meet in their reading groups in between the lecture and the seminar to prepare together for the seminar.
