Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The principal aims of this module are to provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the sociology of health and medicine, with particular reference to: (i) critical perspectives on biomedicine and the medicalisation of society; (ii) lay perspectives and experiences of health and illness; (ii) inequalities in health and illness; (iii) changing social forms of health and medicine in contemporary society.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to: Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of the sociology of health and medicine Critically assess debates on the medicalisation of society and contemporary challenges to medicine Explore lay perspective and experiences of health and illness Assess current evidence and explanations for inequalities in health and illness Analyse the changing social forms of health, illness and medicine in contemporary society
