The LEGACY Project Workshop; The TEF, Learning Gain, Student Profiling & Employability
On Wednesday 12th July 2017, the LEGACY Project coordinated a workshop which brought 4 different aspects of the HE sector together. With almost 50 academic and staff members participating in the event, with staff representation from a broad range of departments and professional services who are involved and/or support Teaching & Learning across the university.
Participants were introduced to HEFCEs Learning Gain (LG) Pilot Programme by Professor Lawrence Young, Academic Vice President, who identified the key aims of HEFCEs LG programme, benchmark research undertaken in this area and its strategic fit to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Through the approval of 14 pilot projects, it is anticipated that the projects will; test and evaluate different methodologies to measure and assess learning gain in HE, assess the scalability of such methods across England, develop and build knowledge within England, facilitate dialogue and across the sector.
Whilst the TEF remains to be a debated subject within the sector and beyond, it is important to note that this is a government priority and, at present, no significant changes are envisaged. The HE sector have been and continue to be engaged in the implementation of the TEF, with Warwick consistently providing input to the consultation process.
The workshop also heard from Professor Gwen van der Velden, WIHEA Director and Professor Chris Hughes Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) who introduced the reporting requirements of the Teaching Excellence Framework. More specifically, the metrics that Warwick and all other HEIs were measured against, they also detailed the significant effort required in gathering and documenting essential information for the narrative submission. This submission document is pinnacle to TEF assessment and is the only opportunity for Warwick to quantify the university’s delivery of teaching and learning, student support services, student support activity and research. This document highlight the benefits students have yielded whilst studying at Warwick, other campuses, and their involvement after their time at the university.
Warwick are leading a project consortium called LEGACY, Sunil Maher presented key project aims to develop evidence based dimensions of learning gain through the creation of a LG measurement tool. The project will also combine the findings of employability support measures to students and build knowledge and shared understanding through delivery of a number of project seminars. The workshop also had Professor Helen Spencer-Oatey present the development and implementation of the Global Education Profiler. This unique tool assists HEIs in developing appropriate support measures and services to an ever increasing diverse population of students from various parts of the world. It aims to provide input to developing strategies that could support the integration of non-UK students to the UK’s learning environment and therefore increase satisfaction levels of the students.
Esther de Perlaky presented the support measures being implemented for UK-educated Chinese students. Warwick were fortunate to be one of two UK HEIs to receive funding to develop and implement support measures that have been developed through the UK government’s ‘Prosperity Fund’. A number of dedicated careers resources for Chinese students have been developed in multiple languages, allowing the opportunity for students to consider employment prior to arrival as well as deliver advice and guidance on employment preparedness.
