Industrial Landscape by Kenneth Long

Industrial Landscape by Kenneth Long

The main subject matter for Kenneth Long came from the industrial landscapes of Barnsley and Nottingham. In 1955 he won the competition 'Industrial Britain' sponsored by Richard Thomas and Baldwins Ltd and his winning painting was reproduced in 'The Studio' magazine two years later. In that year he also had his first solo exhibition at the University of Nottingham. Long's painting in the Warwick collection presents a somewhat grim impression of industrial Britain in the late 1950s, the compressed composition and sombre colours creating a charged and oppressive atmosphere.
