Getting the most from your careers team as an international student
Getting the most out of your careers team means more than just booking an appointment. While this is something you definitely can do, your careers team works really hard in other ways and brings you resources and information that will really help you develop your career.
No career idea? No problem
It seems contradictory as a careers consultant to advise you to ‘embrace uncertainty’ and not to worry if you do not have a career idea or plan. Careers consultants spend a lot of time advising students to develop a plan and work towards a goal. It seems self-evident that you are more likely to achieve your career ambition if you plan it and take the appropriate steps to make it happen. But I have been struck over the years by how many successful alumni I have met who have said how unexpected and unpredictable their career journey has been.
Being a Runner in The TV & Film Industry
Hi, I’m Jasmine, and I’m a Runner at the Factual Entertainment company, 72 Films. The word runner used to scare me as I always looked at it as being at the bottom of the ladder and I felt as if my years of videography experience accounted for much more than making teas and coffees. I had also come off a 6-week training programme at Sky Studios (more about this later), and I felt as if I was going backwards. However, after being at this company for nearly a year, I can now confidently say that running was the best thing that I could’ve done, and I’ll share the lessons I learnt along the way.

How to develop a career in the games industry
Have you ever considered a career in Video Games? When I started making video games professionally after graduating 26 years ago, I didn’t really consider it as a life-long career, it was just something I fell into rather than a conscious career choice. I’d programmed my own games on my computer whilst at university, which helped me land my first job, but I never thought I’d still be doing it over 25 years on. As the industry continues to mature, there are numerous opportunities that the videogame industry can offer to people and provide a long and rewarding career in games.

How employers show that they want people like you!
Publisher Malcolm Forbes (publisher of Forbes magazine) once said that ‘diversity is the art of thinking independently together.’ Diversity is more than just a buzz-word, it can hold the key to fostering new ways of thinking, broadening a customer base and growing a business. Organisations can’t thrive and grow if everyone in them thinks and behaves the same way. Valuing diversity is becoming increasingly important for businesses.
