Unpaid work experience advice

Who can apply?

All current University of Warwick students who study an undergraduate or postgraduate course when the work experience commences can apply.

What type of work experience is supported by the bursary?

The work experience must be self-sourced directly with the employer, and unpaid.

The work experience must not be:

  • Paid
  • Part of your course requirements or an intercalated year
  • Work experience that you have already started or completed
  • A study/personal development opportunity or cultural exchange programme
  • A volunteering opportunity organised through Warwick Volunteers or any volunteering agency
  • Has been arranged via an internship or exchange agency involving an arrangement fee or you have paid/will pay a fee to the organisation itself.

How often can I apply for the work experience bursary scheme?

  • Undergraduates and PHD students can apply once per financial year for the maximum £300 bursary for unpaid work experience undertaken (University’s financial years starts 1 August and ends 31 July)
  • Postgraduate (taught students) i.e. Msc, MA etc. can apply once for the maximum £300 bursary for any unpaid work experience undertaken during the course of your studies

Please note: All work experience placements must finish prior to the month typically allocated to your cohort’s graduation, i.e. July for Undergraduates or January for Postgraduates.

Can I apply more than once in a year?

Yes, the bursary is based on the amount of days you do in the year (up to 10) but you will be limited to the maximum bursary of £300 in that year.

When should I apply?

You must apply at least 2 weeks prior to the start of your work experience in order to receive a decision in time. Late applications will only be considered at the discretion of the Internships Development Manager and retrospective applications will not be considered.

Work experience bursary application form (myAdvantage login required)

How long does it take to complete the application?

You can save a draft of the form as you complete it, which we highly recommend as the system will timeout after 30 minutes to protect your security. We also provide a word version of the form if you wish to complete it offline first and then paste your answers into the online form.

To find your saved draft again, select Form Submissions from the top menu bar within myAdvantage, and open any saved drafts. Open the relevant draft and continue completing it.

When will I receive my payment?

You will receive your payment after you have completed your work experience and submitted a satisfactory reflective report based on your experience.

The Warwick Work Experience Bursary (WWEB) Reflective Report gives you an opportunity to review and reflect on your work experience, drawing out your learning and helping you shape your thoughts ready for your next career opportunity. The report develops your awareness of the working world, improves the way you talk about your skills and experience ready for your next application or interview, and leaves you with a ready-written entry for your CV.

You must answer every question on the form to a satisfactory standard in order to receive your bursary payment and we recommend that you prepare your answers in advance, then copy and paste into the form, so that your login does not time out while you are thinking.

You can download a Word version(Word Document) of the form in advance of your placement, to help you prepare. Internships Development Officers are also available to offer support and guidance on completing a satisfactory reflection on your work experience.
