Information for course participants
Thank you for registering to complete the Active Bystander Intervention course. The course will help you gain knowledge, skills, and confidence to make safe, effective interventions in response to harmful behaviours that are contrary to our shared community values.

Key information
- Pre-activity:
- You are required to complete a pre-activity and some reading. This will help support your learning.
- We send the pre-activity by email a few weeks before your course to help allow plenty of time for completion. The activity should take about 45 minutes to an hour (but it depends on the person).
-
Group size and atmosphere:
-
There will be about 10-20 students in each group.
-
If you're coming alone, don’t worry - most participants won’t know each other either! We’re a
small, friendly team, and we aim to create a welcoming environment for everyone.
-
-
Attendance and register:
-
You must attend the full four hours to complete the course.
-
During the session, please make sure to add your name to the paper register. This helps us keep track of attendance and ensure you receive your certificate.
-
- Post-course:
- You will have an opportunity to complete a short post-course survey. Please take a few minutes to complete it. Your feedback helps us improve and allows us to offer this course to more students in the future.
Previous students say:
"I am certain that we would have a far more enriched university experience if this course were rolled out to everyone as part of their degree programme/role."
"[Tutor] was so good!".
"A really informative course that I thoroughly enjoyed. The tutor for my sessions was so great."
"The group interactions really helped me develop my understanding of topics being discussed and made me appreciative to various differing viewpoints."
Tutors
Our team of experienced facilitators are trained to support you on your active bystander journey.
- Tutors will set the expectations for the course at the start of the session.
- No one is expected to share personal information during the course.
- If you would like to speak to a tutor privately, they are available after the session or at an arranged time.
We may occasionally be joined by a Facilitation Assistant as well.
Content
The course introduces what it means to be an active bystander, how to recognise harmful behaviours, and how we can respond as active bystanders to keep the members of our communities safe. The content is very focused on sexual misconduct and harassment. We do also touch on how the strategies can be applied to other unacceptable behaviours. We include content warnings and participants can take breaks as needed.
If you have any concerns about attending, please contact Puja on puja.laporte@warwick.ac.uk. Any discussions will be treated in confidence.
Course structure
The course runs for four hours. To help you stay engaged, we’ll have:
- Two short 10-minute breaks
- One longer 25-minute break
These breaks give you time to grab a drink, stretch, or step away as needed. You are welcome to bring a drink, and also lunch/any food for the longer break.
Support services
If you need support or simply to talk about any issues or content in the course, you can reach out to your course tutor and/or explore the University's conduct-related support services.
Explore the Students' Union Safer Warwick campaign.
Warwick Award
UG and PGT course completers are eligible for two Core Skills Points (CSPs) for the Warwick Award. You need to submit a copy of your course certificate as evidence. Over 250 students from our courses have registered so far. You will be asked to complete a short reflection about your experience of the course.
