Beyond Science Mentors - Call for Applications

Job Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry is seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals to join their teaching team as course mentors for the new "Beyond Science: Collaborative Student-led Challenges" module. As a Mentor, you will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting students as they tackle sustainability challenges and develop essential skills in project management, public engagement, innovation, design thinking, lobbying, and advocacy across this 15-week module.

** You do not need to be a Chemist or in a science department to apply for this role. We are actively looking for all PGRs to apply as we want interdisciplinary skillsets to help our students grow and develop**

Module Details

  • Module Title: Beyond Science: Collaborative Student-led Challenges
  • Duration: 15 weeks (starting November 2023, running till the end of term two)
  • Time Commitment: 4 hours per week (2 hours per group)
  • Pay: £643.05 (based on a total of 60 hours per tutor across 15 weeks – this figure will increase slightly for successful candidates due to cost-of-living increases)

About the Module

The "Beyond Science: Collaborative Student-led Challenges" module is a new chemistry module co-created with students and industry. It is designed for first-year students and combines classroom and online learning. The module focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration and empowers students to think beyond the realms of science in order to address sustainability challenges. Through engaging with subject specialists from renowned organisations such as Google, Science Museum, Conscious Advertising Network, EU, City of London Corporation, and more, students will explore topics related to the climate crisis, environment, conservation, food and nutrition, software and AI, and biomanufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor two groups of six students throughout the module (four hours in total per week).
  • Conduct weekly one-hour direct support meetings with each group (online or in person).
  • Engage in two thirty-minute in-person sessions with the whole cohort group on Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Collaborate with Module Leads during a 30-minute check-in for preparation (online).
  • Spend 30 minutes checking student progress in engaging with weekly content (online).
  • Provide guidance, listen to ideas, and foster a supportive learning environment for students.
  • Utilise your research experience to enrich discussions and provide valuable insights across disciplines.
  • Communicate effectively with students and Module Leads to ensure smooth coordination and progress.

Teaching Skillset

  • Research experience in any discipline.
  • Confident, supportive, and friendly in listening to students' ideas and concerns.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with students and Module Leads effectively.
  • Interest in student-led teaching pedagogy and interdisciplinary ways of working.
  • Willingness to collaborate on a publication showcasing the innovative module approach.
