Grace Research Fund - Summer 2014
View this email in your browser

Dear friends

It’s been a busy few months since our last newsletter, and we have lots of events coming up over the summer and beyond!

It’s been great to meet so many of you at different events, and I know there are many more of you who are working hard for Grace too. Your commitment to supporting and raising awareness of the fund is amazing. Everything you do (even just liking and sharing a post on Facebook), spreads the word about the Grace Research Fund and makes a real difference, so thank you!

I look forward to hearing from you, and hopefully meeting you at an event soon! Don't forget, we have a great Family Fun Day coming up this Saturday in Warwick.

Fantastic news! Announcing The Grace PhD

As you know the Grace Research Fund exists to raise money to fund research into issues around premature birth and neonatal care.

Our very first Grace PhD researcher will soon begin their work!

They will undertake a three-year, in-depth study looking at pre-eclampsia and its relationship with maternal gut bacteria. Pre-eclampsia affects 2-8% of pregnancies, and is responsible for up to 20% of premature births.

The launch of the PhD is an exciting development for Grace, as we have previously only funded short-term projects. We hope you're as pleased about this news as we are, and we'll keep in touch with research updates over time!

The new researcher will start in the next academic year. Please help us prepare to welcome them by writing them a note - you can reply to this email or go to this quick link online:

"I wanted to wish you all the best with your PhD: your research is important to me because..."

Over £8,000 was raised by Team Grace in this year’s Warwick to Kenilworth Two Castles Run. A fantastic team of 43 runners ran for Grace in this year’s run on a very hot Sunday morning in June. Thank you to all the runners, and for some amazing fundraising. Thank you also to Barclays who are very generously match-funding £1,000 because one of their staff ran for Team Grace!
We also had some great support from runners in this year’s Coventry Half Marathon, the Wolf Run & the Shenstone Fun Run. Rachel Bottrill ran the Shenstone Run after her twin girls were cared for on the neonatal unit. These events raised a superb £1,500 between them.
Coventry City Football Club supported Grace throughout their 2013-14 season, by wearing our logo on their football shirts, allowing us to collect at some of their matches, donating funds to us from players’ fines etc. It was a fantastic way for local people to find out more about the Grace Research Fund, and as well as this has brought in over £13,000 towards our new PhD!

Jayden Rixon was born at 28 weeks, and cared for on the neonatal unit last year. Since then, his kind-hearted family & friends have been collecting every £2 coin they can, and have so far donated a tremendous £3,000!

ISS Facility Services, who provide services including cleaning & catering at the University Hospital Coventry, donated £5,000 to help kick-start our research PhD.

Please join us for our upcoming Grace events - we’d love your family, colleagues & friends to come along too!

Family Fun Day

Saturday 26 July - 12.30-4.30pm - Gap Community Centre in Warwick

The day will include bouncy castle, face-painting, auction and raffle with prizes donated by local companies, nearly new children's clothes and toys, a cake stall and the chance for children to sit in a fire engine as well as refreshments.

Please come along & join in the fun! Click here to read more

This day has been organised by some loving parents in memory of two very special babies, Luke and Annaleah.

The 2014 Graduates’ Party

Saturday 9 August ~ 12-4pm ~ UHCW

All families, friends & supporters are invited to a party for ‘graduates’ of the neonatal unit. There will be entertainment, a bouncy castle, donkey rides, refreshments.

Can you help? We are still looking for volunteers to help set up for the event, as well as someone to run a BBQ stall. Also, if you know a friendly Ice Cream van in the Coventry area who could call in at our event, we’d be very happy to hear from them!

Sporty Fundraising Events

Do you fancy getting fit & helping Grace at the same time?

We have runners taking part in various events this autumn, including:
  • Kenilworth Half Marathon (7 September)
  • Stratford 10k (14 September)
  • Great Birmingham Half Marathon (19 October)
  • Autumn Shakespeare (various distances, including a kids’ fun run – 15 November).

We will provide distinctive Grace running T shirts for the event and as much support as we can with your running. Visit the calendar and us know if you’d like to join Team Grace!

Fancy Skydiving?

We are going to be able to offer charity skydives soon – if you fancy this, do get in touch!

Your own event?

We love to hear from supporters wanting to organise their own events. We can provide you with a fundraising pack, sponsor forms, collecting tins, t-shirts and will support you in any way we can.
