James & Connor's story

James & Connor were born at 29 weeks by emergency c-section - they turn 9 this year! Here is their story as told by mum Emma.

Baby James

“I spent 81 days in total at the NICU, Walgrave Hospital, after my twin boys James and Connor were born by emergency c-section on May 15th 2006, weighing just 2lb10 and 2lb11.

They both needed emergency care on CPAP, and were so tiny and frail. The first 48 hours were probably the toughest: both twins dropped to 2lb04 the day after they were born, and when James was a week old he was diagnosed with a heart murmur.

We were told if it didn’t close on its own, he would need surgery – thankfully somehow he healed on his own, but it was like a constant battle. You took one step forward, and three back, and the twins needed constant care and blood transfusions.

After 81 days our sons were allowed home, but it would never have been possible without the Special Care Baby Unit. I can never thank them enough for what they did for us. Words can never describe how grateful I am, not just for the way they looked after our babies, but for the way they looked after us too. There were days I would break down looking at my babies, but there was always someone to help catch your fall.

The nurses and doctors of the NICU are incredible heroes in my eyes, and from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank them so much for everything.”
