  • AA - Authorised Absence. Period of authorised break from studies (relevant for student visa holders).
  • AEP - Alternative Exams Portal.
  • ATAS - Academic Technology Approval Scheme. Scheme under which which certain applicants for certain security-sensitive courses need to apply and receive approval (ATAS Certificate) prior to their visa application.
  • AUA - Association of University Administrators. AUA is the professional association and representative body for administrators and managers in higher education in the UK.
  • AQSC - Academic Quality and Standards Committee. A committee of the University Senate which has responsibility to develop and implement policy in relation to external quality assessment operations including guidance and requirements issued by the Office for Students, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and relevant Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies. This is the main committee with responsibility for teaching quality.
  • ARC - Academic Resourcing Committee. A committee which reports to both Senate and Council which has overall responsibility to guide the strategic, performance, and financial planning process for academic departments, ensuring that their plans both inform and are informed by the University’s strategy. To guide the setting of admissions targets and monitoring of intake for degree programmes and the determination of appropriate entry requirements.
  • ARC - Audit and Risk Committee. A committee which reports to the University Council and which is responsible in broad terms for of issues relating to risk management and internal controls. Also responsible for the appointment and monitoring of the external auditors and the appointment and terms of engagement of the internal audit service.
  • ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder.


  • BAME - Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic.
  • BCP - Business Continuity Planning.
  • BDF - Business Disability Forum. BDF is a not for profit membership organisation that exists to create a disability smart world by linking businesses, disabled people, and government.
  • BRP - Biometric Residence Permit.Physical card (or recently, particularly for EU students, electronic document) usually issued to holders of visas valid for more than 6 months. Holders are not required to carry this with them, but should keep it safe, and will require it to re-enter the UK during the validity of their visa, or otherwise prove their immigration status .


  • CAHD Advisory Group - Committee on the Appointment of Heads of Departments Advisory Group. A group which involves senior management and departmental representatives to recommend (following consultation) the appointment of the Head of an academic department.
  • CAS - Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Electronic document supplied to prospective or continuing international students (subject to immigration control) for them to reference in their Warwick-sponsored student visa application.
  • CCSG - Campus and Commercial Services Group. A part of the University that is responsible for campus and commercial services; this includes Sports, Arts, Catering, Retail Conferencing, and other commercial activity.
  • CEDAR - Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research. An academic department which focuses primarily on research on a range of educational and psychological issues. These typically focus on the interface between policy and practice, and include research into new government initiatives across the age range of pre-school to higher education and continuing professional practice.
  • CIDO - Chief Information and Digital Officer.
  • CLL - Centre for Lifelong Learning. A centre of expertise in the education of lifelong learners in different contexts, with a focus on enabling adult learners to achieve their personal and professional goals by accessing a Warwick education, irrespective of background.
  • CSAG - Capital Space and Amenities Group. A group which reports to University Estate Committee (a Committee of Council). Its primary work focuses on ensuring that sufficient space is available to support the activities of the University and on promoting good practice within the University in the use of space, the conservation of natural resources and the reduction of waste and pollutants in line with the University's Environmental Sustainability targets.
  • CTA - Common Travel Area. Travel zone between the Rebulic of Irelend, UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands.
  • CTE - Centre for Teacher Education. An academic department which is focused on teacher education, both through initial teacher training and also through continuing professional development.


  • DES - Doctorate Extension Scheme. Scheme aimed at Tier 4 students who are about to be awarded their PhD, granting an additional year of immigration permission to work in the UK. Due to be replaced in 2021 by equivalents in the new immigration system.
  • DSG - Digital Strategy Group.


  • ED&I - Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.
  • EHIC - European Health Insurance Card. This is the card which gives EU nationals access to UK healthcare system and EU students can continue to use them post Brexit if the card is in-date.
  • EIA - Equality Impact Assessment.
  • ELIA - English language Institutional Assessment. This is where academic departments can, in exceptional and limited circumstances, request that a PG Applicant's English language abilities is assessed outside the parameter of the published guidance.
  • EMACS - Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping.
  • ESSAG - Environmental and Social Sustainability Action Group. A group which reports to University Estate Committee (a committee of Council). It focuses on providing advice and direction to the University in relation to the Climate Emergency Declaration and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
  • EUSS - European Union Settlement Scheme. Scheme through which EEA Nationals resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 are able to apply to have previous rights as EU citizens maintained following the cessation of free movement. Successful applications lead to Settled Status or Pre-Settled Status.



  • FGPC - Finance and General Purposes Committee. A committee of Council, FGPC has responsibility for a range of issues including: University finances including performance against budget of the University; Investments and borrowings; the University’s interests in related entities, joint ventures; the strategy and performance of the University’s commercial activities; the University’s employee pension arrangements; the University’s IT strategy and the progress of major IT projects; policies and procedures in relation to the University’s Intellectual Property; the University’s endowment and fundraising strategy and policies; the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the deployment of the University’s resources.
  • FPSC - Financial Plan Sub Committee. A sub-committee of FGPC (see above) with specific responsibility in relation to the development and management of the University’s Financial Plan.
  • FoA - Faculty of Arts.
  • FOOBAR - Federated Object Orientated Bridged Augmented Reality.
  • FSEM - Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
  • FSS / FoSS - Faculty of Social Sciences.



  • GNU - GNU is Not Unix.
  • GTF - Gender Task Force. A Taskforce which champions and oversees the advancement, implementation, and development of gender equality at Warwick.
  • GLaDOS - Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.


  • HEAR - Higher Education Acheivement Report.
  • HEFCE - Higher Education Funding Council for England. HEFCE was a non-departmental public body of Government that was responsible for distributing funding to universities and colleges of higher and further education in England. See OfS and UKRI.
  • HEFCW - Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. Higher education in Wales is a devolved area, which means that most decisions that are made about HE in Wales are taken by the Welsh Government (Department for Skills, Education and Life Long Learning) and implemented by the HEFCW.
  • HESA - Higher Education Statistics Agency. HESA is the official agency for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of quantiative statistics about higher education in the UK.
  • HREiR - HR Excellence in Research. The HREiR award recognises the effective implementation of the 'European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers' which set out principles for good working conditions for researchers.



  • IATL - Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning. An academic department which creates innovative and collaborative pedagogies in interdisciplinary and international environments.
  • IAS - Institute of Advanced Study.
  • ICO - Information Commissioner's Office.
  • IDM - Identity Management.

  • IER - Institute of Employment Research. An academic department which which specialises in research on work and employment for external clients. Research topics include labour markets, apprenticeships, work based learning, careers, job quality, graduate labour markets, and many more.
  • IGSD - Institute for Global Sustainable Development. A research institute that undertakes transdisciplinary research and capacity development to tackle global sustainability challenges and enable transformative change of human-environment interactions. It provides a focal point for Warwick’s sustainable development research, contributing towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but still challenging of them.
  • IHS - Immigration Health Surcharge. Payment towards to cost of healthcare in the UK as part of a visa application.
  • ILR - Indefinite Leave to Remain. Category of leave for foreign nationals to remain in the UK meaning they are no longer subject to immigration control.
  • ISA - International Student Adviser(s). Team of staff in Student Immigration and Compliance trained and authorised to give student immigration advice on Warwick-sponsored student visas, and right to study in the UK.
  • ITLR - Institutional Teaching and Learning Review. A periodic review of teaching and learning which is held simultaneously for all departments once every five years.



  • JCC - Joint Consultative Committee. A committee which brings together representatives of the campus Trades Unions and University management to discuss issue of shared interests.





  • LCARS - Library Computer Access/Retrieval System.
  • LDCU - Learning Design Consultancy Unit.
  • LGBTQUA+ - Lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, undefined, asexual, and identities which are subject to similar forms of prejudice and discrimination.
  • LSD - Latest Start Date. Latest date (as definied on a CAS) that a student must have arrived in the UK and have uploaded evidence of their arrival (for immigration purposes) - normally later than the "course start date".







  • OfS - Office for Students. A non-departmental public body of the Department for Education, acting as the regulator and competition authority for the higher education sector in England.



  • PAIS - Politics and International Studies. An academic department working across the spectrum of politics and international.
  • PDR - Personal Development Review. A formal process during which a member of staff meets with their line manager to discuss their achievements and challenges in the previous year, their targets for the coming year, and their support and development needs.
  • PSE - Pre-sessional English (Course). Pre-degree-level courses for international students.
  • PSG - Professional Services Group. A group which supports Professional Services Steering Committee and looks at thematic issues (opportunities, threats, and matters of strategic importance) and resourcing issues across the University’s professional services. It is also responsible for assessing the performance of services and agreeing further improvement activities.
  • PSSC - Professional Services Steering Committee. A committee which addresses overarching strategic priorities for professional services and is responsible for considering and approving professional service strategic plans for key areas, ensuring that these support delivery of the University Strategy.
  • PVC - Pro-Vice Chancellor. A senior manager working on behalf of the Vice Chancellor; there are three PVCs at Warwick, with oversight of major strategic areas (education, research, and international).
  • PWD - Permanent Withdrawal. Cessation of studies where there is no plan for the student to return.



  • QDSG - Quality and Design Sub-Group. A group which reports to University Estate Committee (a committee of Council) and which advises on issues in relation to design for major and minor capital projects to ensure alignment with the Masterplan Aims and Principles, Design Guides, and supporting the University Strategy.


  • REC - Race Equality Charter. The REC (administered by Advnace HE) aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education.
  • REF - Research Excellence Framework. The REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.
  • RET - Race Equality Taskforce. A Taskforce which consults and works with all business areas across the institution with the aim to address issues around racial inequality.
  • RG - Russell Group. The professional and representative body for 24 leading universities in the UK.
  • RQF - Regulated Qualifications Framework. Framework of qualification levels, often relevant for visa applications and academic progression.
  • RTS - Right to Study (Check). The process of establishing whether a student has submitted evidence that proves their immigration status allows them to study at Warwick. Allowing a student to fully enrol without performing this check would be a serious breach of our visa sponsorship conditions.



  • SAT - Self-Assessment Team. A working often set up to progress a charter, such as an Athena Swan application.
  • SE - Student Experience (Team). Grouping within Student Opportunity comprising Student Immigration and Compliance, Welcome, and World at Warwick subteams.
  • SEAs - Student Experience Ambassador.
  • SELT - Secure English Language Test. English language test required for some visa applications.
  • SCAPVC - School of Creative Arts, Performance, and Visual Cultures.
  • SIC - Social Inclusion Committee. A committee reporting to Senate and Council on on matters relating to the Social Inclusion strategy and the promotion and monitoring of ED&I issues throughout the University.
  • SIS - Student Information Systems.
  • SLEEC - Student Learning Experience and Engagement Group. A group which reports to the Education Committee. SLEEC leads the strategic development of the Warwick Student Learning Experience, students’ engagement with learning opportunities, and students’ engagement with the enhancement of their learning experience in line with the University’s Education Strategy.
  • SLS - School of Life Sciences. An academic department with a vibrant community of undergraduate and postgraduate students, covering a wide range of research across Biomedical Science, Environmental Bioscience, Plant and Crop Science, and Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology.

  • SLT - Senior Leadership Team.
  • SMS - Sponsor Management System. Online interface between the university and the UKVI. Certain departments (e.g. Student Immigration and Compliance, Admissions) use this to issue a CAS, and are required to use it to make reports to the UKVI in relation to a change in student circumstances.
  • SMT - Senior Management Team.
  • SMTT - Space Management and Timetabling.
  • SO - Student Opportunity. Student Opportunity is a professional services department that enables students to develop a global perspective, become culturally aware, and have confidence in achieving their vision of career success. The department does this by supporting students to engage with a rich and varied range of experiences and opportunities helping them to achieve your full potential.
  • SPA - Strategic Planning and Analytics. The SPA Office has responsibility for a number of key functions including providing analytics and management Information institution-wide, Space Management and Timetabling (SMTT), support for Academic Resourcing Committee (ARC) including oversight of the strategy development process, and planning (including student number planning).
  • SROAS - Student Recruitment, Outreach, and Admissions Services. A Professional Services department which deals with the recruitment and admission of students. It also includes a dedicated team who work to improve access to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • SRSG - Student Recruitment Strategy Steering Group. A committee of Academic Resourcing Committee. SRSG provides oversight and guidance in relation to the recruitment and admissions of students.
  • SSLC - Staff-Student Liaison Committee.
  • STEMM - Science, technology, engineering, maths, and medicine.
  • SU - Students' Union.
  • SULG - Students' Union Liaison Group. A group which brings together representatives of the University and the Students' Union to discuss matters of mutual interest.



  • T4 - Tier 4. Tier 4 of the UK Points-Based immigration system. Student Immigration category under which the vast majority of Warwick students were granted visas up until 2020. Replaced (with some changes) in 2020 by "Student Route" visa as part of the new immigration system.
  • TCCs - Training and Conference Centres.
  • TEF - Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework. A government assessment of the quality of undergraduate teaching in universities and other higher education providers in England. The TEF rates universities as Gold, Silver or Bronze, in order of quality of teaching.
  • TEG - Teaching Excellence Group. An annual process working with academic departments to review the progress and developments in relation to teaching excellence.
  • TWD - Temporary Withdrawal. Temporary cessation of studies/access to uniersity facilities (may result in curtailment/need to re-apply for student visa).



  • UCEA - University and Colleges Employers Association. The employers' association for universities and colleges of higher education in the United Kingdom. It represents universities and HE colleges in national negotiations with the five sector trade unions, government bodies, funding councils and other stakeholders.
  • UCU - University and College Union. A trade union representing over staff and postgraduates in universities, colleges, prisons, adult education, and training organisations across the UK.
  • UEB - University Executive Board. A committee involving the University’s senior leadership team. It is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the University strategy, including the coordination of strategic planning and resourcing, and the monitoring of key performance metrics. It provides strategic direction for the allocation of resources and makes major operational decisions.
  • UEEC - University Estate and Environment Committee. A committee reporting to Council. UEC oversees the development, condition, design, utilisation, performance, and sustainability of the University Estate.
  • UI - User Interface.
  • UIMC - University Information Management Committee.
  • UIMEC - University Information Management Executive Committe.
  • UKCISA - UK Council for International Student Affairs. National organisation of which Warwick is an institutional member. Provides conferences, guidance and reference materials on a variety of subjects related to the International Student Experience.
  • UKVI - UK Visas and Immigration. Governent department responsible for monitoring visa sponsor compliance, and for making decisions on visa applications.
  • USS - Universities Superannuation Scheme. A sector-wide pension scheme for academic staff and for professional services staff at equivalent grades.
  • UUK - Universities UK. The collective voice of universities in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Its purpose is to support member universities to maximise their positive impact for students and the public both in the UK and globally through teaching, research, and scholarship.
  • UX - User eXperience. Commonly used along with UI e.g "This application demonstrates the importance of good UI/UX design by lacking either."



  • VC - Vice Chancellor.



  • WAC - Warwick Arts Centre.
  • WBS - Warwick Business School. An academic department with an international reputation for top quality education and research in management and business.
  • WCC - Warwick Crop Centre. Based on the Wellesbourne Campus and including a substantial area of unique land and housing the UK Vegetable Genebank, an internationally recognised centre for translational research in sustainable agriculture, horticulture and food security.

  • WFS - Warwick Foundation Studies. An academic department which focuses on foundation courses (to enable international students to progress to undergraduate study) and which also has responsibility for summer schools and English Language teaching.
  • WIE - Warwick Institute of Engagement. The Warwick Institute of Engagement champions the future of high quality public engagement. It brings together Warwick’s extensive practical engagement expertise with pioneering academic research; putting evidence-led best practice at the core of our thinking – ensuring Warwick’s engagement with the public drives real impact for the communities we serve.
  • WIHEA - Warwick International Higher Education Academy. The UK's first institutional academy of educators for staff and students engaged in the advancement of learning and teaching excellence. WIHEA seeks to develop, recognise, and embed outstanding academic practices that enhance student opportunities to ‘learn beyond boundaries’. Cross-boundary learning, key to a Warwick education, enables students to challenge knowledge and engage with the world critically both during and beyond their studies.
  • WMG - Warwick Manufacturing Group. An academic department and the leading international role model for successful collaboration between academia and the public and private sectors, driving innovation in science, technology, and engineering, to develop the brightest ideas and talent that will shape our future.
  • WMS - Warwick Medical School. An academic department which offers opportunities for undergraduate study, full and part-time research degrees as well as professional development across the healthcare sector.
  • WRAP - Warwick Research Archive Portal.
  • WSS - Wellbeing Support Services. A Professional Services department which focuses on wellbeing (and related matters) for both staff and students.



  • XSS - Cross Site Scripting. Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks are a type of injection, in which malicious scripts are injected into otherwise benign and trusted websites.
