The University of Warwick currently holds an Institutional Silver Award
ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.
In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter covers women (and men where appropriate) in:
- academic roles in STEMM and AHSSBL
- professional and support staff
- trans staff and students
In relation to their:
- progression of students into academia
- journey through career milestones
working environment for all staff
About ECU’s Athena SWAN Charter
The Athena SWAN Charter is based on ten key principles. By being part of Athena SWAN, institutions are committing to a progressive charter; adopting these principles within their policies, practices, action plans and culture.

The UKRC is the Government’s lead organisation for the provision of advice, services and policy consultation regarding the under-representation of women in science, engineering, technology and the built environment (SET).
The UKRC works with employers; professional bodies; education institutions; women's organisations and networks; policy institutes; sector skills councils; the government and many others to promote gender equality in SET. We offer tailored services and support for women at all career stages, including getting started, returning after a break, seeking promotion and aspiring to leadership.
Equality Challenge Unit (ECU)
The ECU supports the higher education sector to realise the potential of all staff and students, whatever their race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion and belief, or age, to the benefit of those individuals, higher education institutions (HEIs) and society.

Membership of Charter Mark Working Groups
All Charter Mark Working Groups (both Athena and Race) meet on a monthly basis. Membership of each Charter Mark Working Group consists of key members of staff and students who were approached to join a particular group, due to their area of expertise/knowledge as well as volunteer members who have a specific interest in the relevant area.
