Departments are requested to nominate a staff representative to act as the Departmental Disability Champion.
Some departments already have contacts, but if there is no representative listed for your department and you wish to volunteer, please speak in the first instance with your Head of Department. As a Disability Champion what will I be required to do?
The intention behind the implementation of Disability Champions was to appoint a representative from each building (department) to act as the main contact for staff, students and visitors with disabilities who may need some assistance/adjustment in their work/study area.
The Disability Champion will also be a point of contact between the department and HR, Health and Safety Office (including Occupational Health), Disability Services Office and any other service area, such as Estates for adjustments to buildings. Part of the role of the Disability Champion will be to improve communication between the departments and service areas on disability related issues.
What commitments will be involved?
In terms of time commitments we would ask that contacts liaise with the above central services on issues that may arise with regard to adjustments for staff/students/visitors with disabilities or temporary disabilities.
To be the main contact to ensure that staff/students/visitors are able to self-evacuate or who may require assistance to evacuate any of the University buildings.
Will there be any meetings?
There will be occasional meetings with the Health and Safety Office/Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Team to discuss on-going projects or news items. Disability Champions will also be welcome to attend the termly Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Network meetings.
