Disability and Carers' Awareness Event

Wednesday 20 June 2018
10am - 3pm
OC0.04, Oculus

On Wednesday 20 June, a number of organisations will be coming to Warwick to host stalls, provide information, and engage in conversation, so that we can increase knowledge of the issues around disability and caring and raise awareness of what support and services exist.

Whether you're affected personally by disability or caring, or you just want to learn more, drop in any time to talk to representatives from internal services at Warwick and external organisations, who will be there to discuss what they do and what support is out there.

We'll also have:

  • A talk from Warwickshire Young Carers' Project about young carers and their Time 4 Us project (from 10.30 - 11am). As a university most of our students are young adults, but often staff aren’t sure how to best support students who may have caring responsibilities. This talk will be interesting and informative and will really help to start more conversation on the experiences of young carer's.
  • A training session on 'Effective Communication' from Stacey Stockwell (at 11.15am - 12pm and 12.30 - 1.15pm). This session teaches people to communicate effectively with people who do not communicate in a conventional way, (with a focus on Deafness and Hard of Hearing). It includes learning the sign language fingerspelling alphabet (which people always love!) and some extremely useful and thought provoking facts about Deaf people and their culture which helps to further cement a far better awareness for hearing people.
  • An introduction to Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership Trust's Recovery and Wellbeing Academy (10 - 10.30am and 12 - 12.30pm). The Academy provides the opportunity to increase our knowledge and skills to become the expert in managing our own mental health and to work in a recovery focused style to reach our full potential and achieve our life goals.
  • An art workshop with Arty Folks, a local charity supporting people to achieve mental well-being through the visual arts and peer support (1.30-2.30pm). This session offers an enjoyable, positive and encouraging environment where you will be supported to build foundation art skills and to enjoy the company of your peers.
  • An opportunity to find out how accessible Warwick is. We are hiring wheelchairs and encouraging people to sign up to follow a planned route around campus to experience how accessible the university is (this will take approximately 30 minutes).

As if that wasn't enticement enough, we'll also be providing a free buffet lunch.
