Guidance for completing a Safe System Of Work.

This list of the minimum safety requirements for using lasers of different classes is useful as an aid memoir when writing a safe system of work. For the higher classes, further controls may be required as determined by the risk assessments.

Class 1

• The laser must be labelled correctly.

If the laser system is class 1 due to engineering controls and contains a laser of higher than class 2M, then significant hazards may occur during servicing, installation etc and hence the following may also be required:

  • Prepare written system of work following a risk assessment.
  • Provide PPE if necessary.
  • Register the laser.
  • Affix warning label at entrance to room.

This does not apply to laser printers, CD/DVD players or other devices not serviced by the user. If in doubt contact the LSO for advice.

Class 1M

• The laser must be labelled correctly.

• Avoid intra-beam viewing with condensing optics such as telescopes, binoculars, microscopes or other lens based systems.

Class 2

• The laser must be labelled correctly.

• A beam stop must be used.

• Keep beam paths above or below eye level.

• Prepare written system of work following a risk assessment.

Class 2M

• The laser must be labelled correctly.

• A beam stop must be used.

• Keep beam paths above or below eye level.

• Prepare written system of work following a risk assessment.

• Avoid intra-beam viewing with condensing optics such as telescopes, binoculars, microscopes or other lens based systems.

Class 3R

• The laser must be labelled correctly.

• A beam stop must be used.

• Keep beam paths above or below eye level.

• Prepare written system following a risk assessment.

• Avoid open beam paths wherever possible.

• Provide PPE if necessary.

• Register the laser.

• Register the users.

• Attend Laser Safety Training.

• Affix warning label at entrance to room.

Class 3B and Class 4

As for Class 3R and in addition :-

• Use a key control.

• Provide visible emission indicator at laser output.
