Pay and Reward - general update May 2021

This update covers the pay increase that will be implemented from August 2021 in line with national negotiations between universities and trade unions. Staff eligible for incremental increases within their grade on the University’s pay scale will also see progression increases from August or October (as per your terms and conditions of employment).

The University takes part in ‘collective bargaining’ for your annual pay award, meaning we, along with most other Universities and Higher Education Colleges, ask a representative body, UCEA (Universities and Colleges Employers Association), to negotiate with the trade unions on our behalf.

The negotiations between Higher Education employers and Trade Unions on the national pay award for 2021-22 have just concluded, and the final offer that has been made to the trade unions to consider is a 1.5% pay increase, with those lower on the pay spine in line to receive a higher percentage pay rise.

The range of pay increases is from 1.54% and 3.6% for pay points below Spine Point 22, with an increase of 1.5% to all pay points at Spine Point 22 or above and we will share specific information regarding the exact increase you will be awarded shortly. More than half of the staff covered by the negotiations are also eligible for progression pay increases typically worth 3%.

All staff will receive an above inflation pay increase and we expect to be able to implement the pay increase from August, once the trade unions have considered the offer.

The University is committed to paying the Living Wage Foundation rate which is higher than the National Living Wage (£8.91) and to ensuring that all employees receive no less than £9.50 per hour for a 36.5 hour week.
