Pay and Reward - general update August 2021

This update covers the pay increase that will be implemented from August 2021 following national negotiations between universities and trade unions. Staff eligible for incremental increases within their grade on the University’s pay scale will also see progression increases from August or October (as per your terms and conditions of employment).

All eligible staff will receive a pay increase and we will implement the pay increase from August.

The University takes part in ‘collective bargaining’ for your annual pay award, meaning we, along with most other Universities and Higher Education Colleges, ask a representative body, UCEA (Universities and Colleges Employers Association), to negotiate with the trade unions on our behalf.

UCEA has advised that they regard the pay negotiations as concluded and that the pay uplifts offered with effect from 1 August 2021 be implemented.

There were negotiations between Higher Education employers and Trade Unions on the national pay award for 2021-22, and the final offer made to the trade unions was a 1.5% pay increase, with those lower on the pay spine receiving a higher percentage pay rise.

The range of pay increases is from 1.54% and 3.6% for pay points below Spine Point 22 (top of Grade 4), with an increase of 1.5% to all pay points at Spine Point 22 or above. We will share specific information regarding the exact increase you will be awarded shortly. More than half of the staff covered by the negotiations are also eligible for incremental progression pay increases typically worth 3%.

The University is committed to paying the Living Wage Foundation rate which is higher than the National Living Wage (£8.91) and to ensuring that all employees receive no less than £9.90 per hour for a 36.5 hour week.
