Changed timing of IT Services Managed Desktop software updates process

A change is taking place to the IT Services Managed Desktop to the timing of Microsoft updates. This change has been piloted with IT Services staff and will be applied to the staff running our desktop from a laptop. Check if you are running an IT Services Managed Desktop?

Microsoft updates (minor changes or patches to an existing version) will no longer be applied in the Thursday night maintenance window. Instead, updates will come directly from Microsoft and:

  • will be ready to install seven days after Microsoft releases them, as this is Microsoft's recommended best practice
  • technical staff who run or own applications can receive the updates early, two days after Microsoft has released them. This change allows them to test their applications before general release. Interested staff, please contact the IT Services Helpdesk to request earlier updates for testing

We will be upgrading to the latest version of Windows 10 with associated upgrades. Future upgrades (major changes or moves to a new version) will always happen 180 days after the Microsoft release.

Note:
Users of the IT Services managed desktop should continue to connect to the campus VPN every week.
