Bluecat migration to Infoblox DNS/DHCP rescheduled 6pm, Wed 24th June 2020

As part of the Network Replacement and Security Programme (NRSP), we will be replacing all network equipment at the University. Our next step is to replace the BlueCat DNS/DHCP servers with equipment from the supplier Infoblox.

We had planned to migrate in March but had to postpone due to the Covid19 lockdown. We have considered both remote working and the exam period for students, in selecting a new migration date.

What will this change involve?

We will migrate the information contained on the current BlueCat DNS/DHCP servers to the new Infoblox equipment. At this stage, we intend to provide a like-for-like replacement of functionality.

When will this take effect?

This change is now due to start at 18:00 on Wednesday, 24th June 2020 and we anticipate will end at 10pm.

You will NOT be able to make changes on the BlueCat boxes during a change freeze period that starts before the change and finishes 2 days afterwards. The change freeze is from 5pm on the 18th June to 9am on the 25th June 2020. See below for how to make urgent changes.

What does this mean for you?

During the evening of 24th June, users may experience issues difficulty connecting to internal and external services. Disruptions are likely to be for a few minutes, but there may be several of them during the entire 4-hour period.

Post-change freeze (after the 25th June), we will be monitoring the new equipment to ensure there are no problems.

If you require a change to the DNS/DHCP service then, you will need to submit a request via the online help form. The technical team will be in touch to carry out requests, provide access and facilitate knowledge transfer.

Training will be made available on how to make changes, following the switchover.

What do you need to do now?

  1. If you no longer use the BlueCat equipment, please let us know.
  2. If you have any DNS services you would like us to test directly after the migration; please let us know.

Short videos will be published from the 15th June to help guide you through administrative tasks on the new service.
