Office for Mac 2016

Staff currently using Office for Mac 2016 on University Macs may have received notices from Microsoft asking you to upgrade to a later version, as Microsoft is withdrawing support for version 2016 in October 2020. All staff currently using Office for Mac 2016 are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of Office for Mac, which you can do via your Office 365 account, following these instructions.

Although this is called 'Office 365', a full desktop version will be installed on your Mac. You do not need to be connected to the internet 100% of the time to use it - just once every 30 days so that the software can validate your licence. By installing Office for Mac (Office 365), you will get the latest version of all Office apps, ensuring access to the latest available functionality, as well as continued access to important security updates.

Changed timing of IT Services Managed Desktop software updates process

A change is taking place to the IT Services Managed Desktop to the timing of Microsoft updates. This change has been piloted with IT Services staff and will be applied to the staff running our desktop from a laptop. Check if you are running an IT Services Managed Desktop?

Microsoft updates (minor changes or patches to an existing version) will no longer be applied in the Thursday night maintenance window. Instead, updates will come directly from Microsoft and:

  • will be ready to install seven days after Microsoft releases them, as this is Microsoft's recommended best practice
  • technical staff who run or own applications can receive the updates early, two days after Microsoft has released them. This change allows them to test their applications before general release. Interested staff, please contact the IT Services Helpdesk to request earlier updates for testing

We will be upgrading to the latest version of Windows 10 with associated upgrades. Future upgrades (major changes or moves to a new version) will always happen 180 days after the Microsoft release.

Users of the IT Services managed desktop should continue to connect to the campus VPN every week.

Microsoft Project and Visio, please complete our survey to get access

Changes to Microsoft's licence model, from 1st October 2020, mean that we will no longer be able to provide unlimited site-wide licenses for Microsoft Project or Visio. Instead, we will move to single-user licences for staff. IT Services will continue to fund these licences, as long as the cost does not exceed our current budget.

Action required
To find out the number of licences we need, please complete our brief survey as soon as possible, if you require access to Project or Visio from 1st October 2020. Please do so, only if you really need Project or Visio. Consider whether other free options like Excel might work for your requirements instead.
