Teaching Tools Update

We gave an update at the beginning of July on the teaching tools available. A lot of progress has been made in the last few months on supporting blended and online learning. We have created documentation to help our colleagues make the best use of available facilities in this challenging period for us all. We hope to communicate the key teaching-related information here in one place.

Preview of Microsoft Teams Breakout Rooms

Microsoft is developing breakout rooms functionality for Teams and has given the University ‘private preview’ access to it. Breakout rooms enable meeting organisers to split main meetings into smaller sessions for focused discussions. Please note:

  • The preview could end at any time so should be used purely to explore the functionality. You should not use it for critical events, or add valuable or sensitive content.
  • Microsoft would welcome your feedback (see 'Find out more' link below). We’re obliged to provide any feedback to Microsoft alone – please do not comment on the functionality outside of Warwick.

Working securely: using Workspace

Workspace is our new Service to give authorised users access to University systems and data remotely and securely. We are making the Service available to colleagues progressively through September.

Recommended IT device specifications for students

Students will need a portable computing device for the academic year 2020/21. There is central guidance available giving recommended specifications for Macs and Windows laptops. All students should follow this unless their department issues specific alternative guidance, which would take priority. The central guidance will be reviewed annually.

Managed desktops to include new MS Edge

A new Microsoft Edge was released on January 15, 2020. It is compatible with all supported versions of Windows, and macOS. We are now replacing MS Edge on the IT Services managed desktops with this version.

Disruption to Single Sign-on and other applications, Wed 19 Aug, 11:00-12:00

A number of applications will be unavailable while we perform essential database maintenance on Wednesday 19th August 2020 between 11am and 12pm:

  • Single Sign-on (signing in with your ITS Account) - unavailable for up to 15 minutes (if you are already signed in, you will be unaffected)
  • WebGroups (creating or editing groups) - unavailable for up to 15 minutes
  • External Users (creating or editing External IDs) - unavailable for up to 15 minutes (external users who are signed in will be unaffected)
  • Warwick Blogs, Warwick Search and Files.Warwick - unavailable for up to 30 minutes
