How to use the page layout request form

The page layout form enables you to choose from a ready-made layout or design your own. The form is best viewed on a desktop using either the Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser.

Design your own layout

  1. Use the slider to change the preview colour. This colour isn't saved; it's just to help you preview the layout.
  2. The left-hand side lists the various components you can include in your layout (slideshows, images, boxes and so on.) A red, dotted area denotes a component dragged to an invalid area.
  3. Drag components from the left-hand side to the grid in the centre. After you place a component, you can drag it to a new position. To remove a component, drag it from the grid to the trash bin at the right-hand side.
  4. When you're happy with your layout, click the Save button. This adds your layout to the request form and temporarily disables the layout design area to prevent retroactive changes. You can save a design as many times as you like, but only your final save is submitted to the Web Team.
  5. Click the Mobile button to preview how your layout displays on a small-screen device. This is just a representation but it gives you an idea of how the components stack.
  6. Click the Clear button to remove all components and start again.

Custom components

The custom components are intended as placeholders for non-standard content – for example, social media feeds or video players. Describe what you want to put in the custom content boxes in the Further comments section of the request form.

  4. Include any other information you want to tell the ITS Web Team about – for example, the content of any custom components in your layout.

Frequently asked questions

What colour will my page layout be?

Your layout will match your new or existing website's colour palette. The colour slider is only for a preview.

Can I change my layout later?

You can change the form as often as you like, as long as you save every time.

How long does it take you to add the layout to my website?

It can take up to five working days for a member of the team to start work on your page layout. The time to complete the work is dependent on how fast you can respond to any follow-up queries and the volume of other work at the time you submit your request.

What information should my homepage contain?

The purpose of a home page is to give the visitor an idea of what your site is about. It's also used to make navigation to other parts of your site easier. Your home page should have a good balance between content and blank space to avoid overwhelming the visitor with information. Some key design tips from us are:

  1. Put your most important content at the top.
  2. Reduce the amount of text on the page.
  3. Make good use of blank space.
  4. Think about what your audience would like.
  5. Make important information easy to find.
  6. Use a good balance between text and pictures.

What should I do if I don't have much content for news and/or event feeds?

Try to create or choose a design that doesn't place a large amount of emphasis on news and events, such as ‘Simple plus three images’. Components can also be resized to adjust to their content and repositioned to provide a good visual fit.
