Add a news feed

Use the news page template as the central place on your website to publish news items. You can then embed a feed of headlines in any other page – for example, your home page. When you publish a news item, the news feed updates automatically.

You can also embed a feed of news items tagged with a keyword – ‘Publications’ or ‘Conferences’, for example. Some departments do this on their research landing pages.

Add a news feed in the Components Editor

  1. Browse to the page where you want to add the news feed.

  2. Go to Edit > Edit centre content:

The SiteBuilder 'Edit' menu, with the option to 'Edit centre content' highlighted

  3. Place your cursor where you want to add the news feed.

  4. In the left-hand menu, select Add content feeds > News feed:

The 'Add content feeds' menu, with the 'News feed' option highlighted

Alternatively, to edit an existing News feed, select it in the editor then select Settings in the component toolbar.

  5. The News feed pop-up appears:

The 'News feed' options pop-up for a List feed

  6. Enter the Page path (using an absolute or relative URL) for the news page you want the feed component to display.

  7. Use the drop-down list to choose whether you want news entries in the feed to Display as a List, as Tiles, or Tiles - scrollable. Note that some feed options are available only for one display style.

  8. If you chose to display the feed as Tiles - scrollable, set how many tiles should display at a time by entering a number in the Number to show on screen at once box. Use the drop-down to select which Scroller controls to show:

The options specific to the 'Tiles - scrollable' view of a News feed component

See our help article on the Horizontal scroller component for more details on this.

  9. Optionally, set a Feed title to appear at the top of the feed.

  10. Select the Maximum number of items to appear in the feed.

  11. If you chose to display the feed as a List, use the checkbox to determine whether articles should Show thumbnail images. News items without a selected image will display a placeholder image of flags.

  12. Use the checkboxes to determine whether Headlines are clickable links, and if you want the feed to Show publication dates for articles.

  13. Optionally, Enter tag names separated by commas to show only items with these tags. This is useful if you want the feed to display only those news items that have been assigned particular tags on the source page.

  14. If the feed is set to display in List view, choose how much of each item you want to Show:

    • Headlines only - No item detail will be shown.

    • Expanded top story - The first item in the list will display its abstract under the headline.

    • All stories expanded - All items will display the story abstract under their headline.

    • Specific number of stories expanded - You can set the Number of stories to expand (Optional).

  15. Optionally, set the Character limit for headlines.

Note: If you chose to expand any articles above, you will also have the option to set a Character limit for expanded stories. This may be useful for articles with long abstracts, to control the amount of space the feed occupies on your page.

  16. For feeds displaying as Tiles or Tiles - scrollable, you have the following additional options:

    • Show Facebook like buttons next to each item by selecting the checkbox.

    • Display only the thumbnail and headline for items in the feed by deselecting the Show abstracts for items checkbox.

    • Select Show social media sharing buttons to display a Share this button beneath each news item. Visitors who select this button will have the option to share the item on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or via email.

Note: Facebook like buttons and the Share this button will only be displayed if the source page for the feed has its view permissions set to 'Any user'.

  17. Select Add news feed.

  18. Once you're finished editing your page, select Publish.
