Add a Google Analytics tracking ID

Important: Google retired Universal Analytics on July 1st, 2023. If you have not already done so, you will need to update your site to use Google Analytics 4 in order to resume receiving analytics data.

Google Analytics is a free service to collect and analyse data about how visitors use your website. This article describes how to add a Google Analytics tracking ID to your website in SiteBuilder. To do this, you need admin or edit permissions for your site's home page.

Note: If you already use Google Analytics via Google Tag Manager, you should not add a separate Google Analytics tracking ID in the site properties, as doing so means data is recorded twice. Instead, use the Google Tag Manager container ID.

Add a tracking ID

If your site already uses a Universal Analytics ID, Google provides a GA4 setup assistant to help you switch over. To add a new ID:

  1. Go to and sign in with your Google Account.

  2. Set up a property in Google Analytics and make a note of your Measurement ID, which starts with G-.

    Tip: To find the ID for a Google Analytics 4 property that already exists:

    1. Go to the Admin page of your Google Analytics account.
    2. Select your property from the drop-down at the top of the Property column.
    3. Select Data streams.
    4. Select the data stream you need the ID for.
    5. Use the Copy button to copy your G- ID.

    Note: The old Universal Analytics tracking IDs which are being retired begin with UA-.

  3. Once you have your tracking ID, return to SiteBuilder and browse to any page on your website.

  4. Go to Edit > More, then select the Current site tab.

    Note: To access the Current site tab, you need edit or admin permissions for your website's home page.

  5. In the Editing site section, select Edit site properties:

  6. Enter the tracking ID in the Google Analytics codes text box:

    Tip: If you have multiple Google Analytics codes - for example, if you are temporarily using an old Universal Analytics tracking ID (starting with UA-) alongside a new Google Analytics 4 one - enter them separated by commas.

  7. Select Save changes. The tracking ID is now added to every page on the site.

Important: It is not possible to identify the owner of an existing tracking ID based on the Google Analytics code. For this reason, we recommend that multiple users have permissions on the relevant Google Analytics property, to ensure continuity of access to analytics data if personnel changes occur within a department.


The Google Analytics code in site properties does not cascade to sub-sites. To see data in Google Analytics for sub-sites, you have the following options:

  • Add the tracking ID to each individual sub-site. Data for all sites under a single ID appears in the same reporting dashboard in Google Analytics.
  • Create new tracking IDs for each sub-site, so that each site has its own reporting dashboard in Google Analytics.
