Inspiring Women: Yvonne Roberts - How the media makes women uncomfortable in their own skin and calls it feminism - and what's to be done?

Yvonne Roberts is a novelist and award winning journalist with over 50 years’ experience. After being awarded Young Journalist of the Year for a campaigning series on the disabled, she worked in current affairs television for fifteen years covering wars and disengagements in the Middle East, Northern Ireland, presidential elections in the US, Franco’s death in Spain and rebellion in Portugal as well as domestic politics. She has written several non-fiction books on feminism, masculinity, social policy, ageing and resilience. She has written for all the broadsheets; her jobs have included worked as women’s editor for The Observer, Deputy features editor on the defunct London Daily News and more recently as Chief Leader Writer for The Observer. She spent three years working at the think tank, The Young Foundation, a centre of social innovation, founded by Michael Young. She is now a Fellow of the Young Foundation, chair of the charity Women in Prison, campaigning to reduce the female prison population by half by 2020, Sussex University’s first political writer in residence and she is working on her fifth novel and writing for The Observer.
