Achievements (from 1 January 2012 to 30 November 2012)
- Monthly newsletter
A total of 7 monthly e-newsletters were produced.
The e-newsletter was replaced and continued, funded by EPSRC Delivering Impact and Developing Leaders.
The monthly e-newsletter is sent to Research Staff.
The purpose of the e-newsletter is:
- To raise awareness of Learning & Development Enterprise & Entrepreneurship opportunities (ie. LDC / UOW / nationally)
- To promote the Learning & Development Enterprise & Entrepreneurship offerings / workshops and encourage take-up by research staff
- Publicise funding available for Learning & Development Enterprise & Entrepreneurship activity (ie. Awards / Funding for Research Staff Networks/ other external or internal funding eg JSPS)
- Ideas & sharing practice. Also focusing on some of the activities at Warwick eg Impact, Engagement etc (ie. focus on:.........)
- Case Studies
- The seven case studies are intended to provide both a legacy on EPSRC Enterprise & Entrepreneurial Transferable Skills funding events and offer feedback on the benefits resulting from events and sharing practice or learning. The case studies also offer ideas and best practice from the range of initiatives supported enabling researchers to copy or adapt ideas.
Research Staff Provision
Researcher provision has been offered via the following workshops plus bespoke workshops / sessions for departments or faculties.
- Presenting your Research to different audiences
- How to sell your research & at what cost
- Being an Enterprising Researcher
- Technology for Researchers
- Series of 3 for Departments
- presentation skills for post doc’s focusing on job interview in the practical presentation (adding to their toolbox)
- academic writing for non-specialist audiences with practical examples on press releases, fact sheets, website
- funding opportunities
- Engineering session ‘How to sell yourself & your research’
- Supervision ‘soft skills’ for Institute for Employment Research (IER)
- Supporting WMG researcher network in developing a mentoring programme
- Supporting the Researching China Networks & its events
- Preparation & development for a Maths & Statistics seminar series starting September 2012
- Developing the career pathway/promotions project
- Facilitating the Fellows’ Charter focus group
Academic Writing Programme (AWP)
- 2 Day “Writing Camp
25 & 26 July 2012
It was a collaborative project undertaken with Rochelle Sibley from the Warwick Writing Programme.
- 1 to 1 Support for research staff has continued providing support/advice on research staff's academic writing for either publication or funding proposals.
Julie Gallimore provided 1-1 support for research staff to assist with CV advice, career planning, preparing for interviews or mock interviews. EPSRC Enterprise & Entrepreneurial Transferable Skills funding has provided the funding to support the service.
Research Team Leader Programme
Trudy Hillier (LDC) developed this pilot programme in collaboration with external consultant, David Faraday. The programme ran once during this funded period. 16 delegates attended this programme.
The programme covered 4 main areas:
1. Working with Others
2. Leading your Team
3. Handling Change and Uncertainty
4. Running Effective Meetings
Funding has been accessed and used in many exciting ways by individuals and departments. 30 awards have been offered to research staff with a total value of £53,400 as of 30 November 2012.

Feedback reports have been produced and are available to share the learning as well as providing ideas and examples that can be copied or adapted in the future.
In summary, the funding enabled the research staff involved to:
- increase their networking and promotion opportunities for themselves, their departments and the university.
- create opportunities to liaise with other potential collaborators within and outside academia, including companies and SME's.
- pilot ideas or to test ideas to include in future grant applications.
- develop their transferable skills (organising events) useful for career development.
Supporting the Development of a Research Staff Community
- Research Staff Networks
Working with “leads” to encourage research networks both within faculties & departments.
- Research Staff Forum
The Research Staff forum (RSF) has been supported by EPSRC funding which funded a minimum of a termly meeting of research staff representatives from departments. £1000 budget.
Sandy Sparks (Learning & Development Advisor for research staff) was EPSRC Enterprise & Entrepreneurship (E&E) transferrable skills funded from Jan 2012 - July 2012 and focussed on the following:
- Managing the EPSRC E&E Transferable Skills Awards (total £100K)
- Supporting researcher networks and E&E funding for networks http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/ldc/researchers/networking/funding
- Ensuring we provide high quality information for research staff through the website and monthly e-newsletter on E&E opportunities.
- Scoping existing provision of E&E support in Warwick and outside for Research staff.
- Commissioning, designing and delivering workshops for research staff.
- Offering bespoke E&E support to Departments and Faculties work.
Gareth Wright (Publicity co-ordinator) was also E&E transferrable skills funded until July 2012. Gareth focussed on:
