Martin teaches on an extremely broad-ranging core module. It covers a substantial amount of historical content as well as the theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of history and also has a considerable practical skills element. It is challenging for teachers as well as students and feedback demonstrates that he has risen to these challenges magnificently.
The ability to create an effective learning environment is one area in which student nominators have highlighted Martin’s teaching excellence. In his seminars, he uses a range of strategies to ensure that students actively participate, challenge and engage with one another. Students say “he creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and cooperation which greatly enhances our willingness to participate”. Students also state his feedback is motivating and thought provoking. It is testament to his expertise that he has been asked to make a major contribution to the end-of-year first-year marking.
