LDC has been awarded funding to develop project management skills for research staff. The funding is through the Researcher Development Initiative scheme, which has been introduced by the ESRC Training and Development Board to support training and development of researchers across the social sciences at all stages of their career.
In a recent survey of research staff, conducted by LDC, the skills identified as being the most in need of development were project management and collaboration. This was true for researchers undertaking their first research project as well as for more experienced staff running collaborative projects across organisations. Most available training in project management has limited value in HE as it is developed largely with hierarchical, commercial organisations in mind and it does not address the specific issues of working in HE. The proposed project will therefore develop new training and guidance based on the experience of successful research project managers in HE.
