What is Academic Practice?

We define academic practice as professional work which directly contributes to the generation and dissemination of knowledge. This includes teaching and learning, research, and supervising and managing research; and managing academic departments.

The Learning and Development Centre seeks to work closely with academic departments, to deal with issues of particular concern in a disciplinary context. We are experienced at organising, leading and contributing to departmental awaydays, particularly for review and planning.

We also provide sessions on specific topics – areas in which we can offer direct support include:

  • Appraisal
  • Evaluation
  • Linking research and teaching
  • Project management
  • Student feedback
  • Teaching techniques
  • Support for contract research staff
  • Assessment
  • E-learning and E-tutoring
  • Personal organisation
  • Professional development issues
  • Teaching excellence
  • Teaching observation
  • Curriculum planning
