Marie Garnett

Marie GarnettI have conducted and led on a range of educational evaluation projects, including some national projects.  Indeed, educational evaluation formed 50% of my role whilst at the University of Sheffield.  The majority of evaluations that I have been involved in have been undertaken in order to inform the development of institutional policy (e.g. reform of the Medical Degree at the University of Sheffield and the implementation of a skills training programme for research staff at the University of Warwick).  However, I have also been involved in evaluating the `success’ of various educational developments (e.g. peer mentoring, personal development profiling for students).

I am very interested in the idea of utilising evaluation at every stage of the lifecycle of a project or initiative, to ensure that key stakeholders are provided with data relating to approach, implementation and sustainability at key stages to help inform project planning and policy-making.

I have experience in using a wide range of evaluation methodologies including on-line and paper-based questionnaires, observations, grounded theory, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, pyramid interviews and desk-based research.

Evaluation Experience

1992-1995

Internal Evaluator for Enterprise in Higher Education at the University of Sheffield.

This was 50% of my role and included such things as a widescale evaluation of the UG Medical Curriculum at Sheffield, which led to the curriculum becoming `vertically integrated' i.e. no pre-clin/clin. phase!  I also evaluated the effectiveness of University initiatives such as peer mentoring, project work in Sciences and students' personal development planning.
