ARCHES is a new project launched January 2003 that aims to provide and evaluate the re-purposing of educational materials between subject disciplines and between institutions. The project title is ARCHES (Antiquity-Related Collections Harnessed for Educational Scenarios) and is being run by the Centre for Academic Practice and the School of Theatre Studies.

Building on interactive paradigms, such as those developed by the TELRI, RESULTs and Iconex projects, ARCHES proposes that student-centred learning in an online learning environment should be driven by student content creation and the open and collaborative exploration and interrogation of research material. This material can also be re-purposed and shared between subject disciplines to create a fully trans-disciplinary learning resource. Custom-built tools have already been used to support a number of pilot courses at Warwick in various subject areas. The approach enables students not only to access pre-prepared content and interact with tutors and peers online, but also to design and populate their own online environment with original electronic resources.

The elements of the online information environment which have thus far resisted standard forms of modelling are the complex interactive events, involving objects, tools, resources, interfaces, sequences of interaction and the like, which make up a "learning conversation". These innovative projects therefore have clear and far-reaching implications for e-learning pedagogy: the design of electronic learning environments and tools. Such approaches are excellent in exploiting research assets prepared at Warwick and is very much in line with institutional learning and teaching strategies of research-led teaching.

bullet Embedding ICT

Exploring institutional approaches to embedding ICT in teaching and learning: A review and analysis of generic national projects

This study was undertaken between July and October 2002 funded by the LTSN Generic Centre with the aim of drawing out lessons learned from a number of national projects that future projects can utilise for work with institutions. The work reviewed and analysed the outcomes of several national projects - predominantly TLTP3, FDTL and ScotCIT - that have experiences with working with institutional strategies.

The study extracted success factors in embedding learning technologies at institutional level from the experiences of national projects and in consultation with national funding and support bodies.

The materials of the project findings and analysis are available on the project web site including:

  • a generic model for embedding
  • an evaluation methodology, and
  • a national consultation paper.

bullet Transferability

The TELRI Project is currently undertaking transferability work funded by the HEFCE comprising a formal, targeted and evidenced approach to transferring our approaches at the institutional level and facilitating the process of embedding innovation from development work.

SiteBuilder is a tool developed by e-lab to make publishing information on the web simpler. It is intended for users whose web sites are primarily used for the delivery of static information.

With SiteBuilder you can...

  • Edit web pages online in a WYSIWYG editor (*) without any requirement to know HTML
  • Create new web pages in corporate look and feel from existing Office documents, or create new blank pages
  • Upload images, PDF files, or Office documents and make them available for download
  • Specify lists of users who may view a page, based on university login codes
  • Specify lists of users who may make changes to a page, again based on university login codes
  • Request an email notification when a page is changed.

Sitebuilder is available now, at no charge, for users within the university with low or medium traffic (<5000 hits per day) web sites. It is currently in use for around 40 sites, ranging from academic departments such as the School of Law, to administrative sites such as e-lab or the Academic Office. Warwick Forums is a communication tool developed by e-lab to provide message boards for use within teaching modules, research groups, committees or any other group which needs to have (non-real-time) discussions.

  • Forums can be viewed on the web at - each forum can be public, or read/post rights can be restricted to groups or individuals.
  • Forums can be "moderated", that is all messages must be passed by a moderator before appearing in the forum.
  • Users can join forums and the web interface will keep track of which messages in those forums they have and have not read.
  • Forum members can choose to read each forum on the web, by e-mail or in some cases via the campus Usenet news server. Soon there will also be a facility to receive urgent messages by SMS text message to a GSM mobile phone.
  • The web interface to forums allows attachments such as images, MS Word documents etc to be included with messages. There is also a spelling checker, search facility, etc.

Warwick Forums is available now for all members of the University. It is also possible for users outside the University to register to read forums. The web interface includes a facility to request the creation of a new forum; additionally, departmental IT managers can create and delete forums themselves without the involvement of IT Services. There are no charges associated with using Forums, however when the SMS facility is released to students they will be charged per message sent by SMS.

Planned features include:

  • Integration with SiteBuilder and departments' own wesbite styles
  • Usage statistics for forum owners
  • Mass subscription of groups of students from the Directory Service
  • Archiving facilities.
