Developing Professional Autonomy: An action research based MA module and its ongoing evaluation

Richard Smith, CELTE, University of Warwick

The Centre for English Language Teacher Education (CELTE) offers MA programmes for English language teaching professionals from around the world. Our enhancement strategy in this setting has been to redesign a particular module to focus on the development of students’ ‘professional autonomy’, that is, their ability to evaluate and develop their own practice. Our innovations involve course design on an action research-based learning model and the incorporation of procedures to enhance ‘Personal Development Planning’. Evaluating the course on an ongoing basis has helped us provide the support which seems needed for individual students in the sometimes difficult transition to greater autonomy.
