The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) and the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) are national surveys, managed centrally by the Higher Education Academy. PTES is run on an annual basis and PRES is run every two years. More than 100 HE institutions take part in these surveys.
PRES and PTES provide the University with critically important feedback from postgraduate students, which is not readily available through other means. This feedback relates to two key areas:
- Academic departments – thereby helping to enhance teaching and learning, and to identify areas for change.
- Central services – thereby helping to improve the delivery of existing services and to identify any gaps in provision.
Although the results do not feed into league tables, they provide Warwick with the opportunity to benchmark its results against similar institutions. It is therefore vital that the results are representative of Warwick’s postgraduate population.
All fully-enrolled postgraduate students at Warwick are invited to take part in these surveys via direct emails sent by the Graduate School. It is important, however, that academic staff communicate with their postgraduate students about the survey, in order for it to be widely recognised and thereby achieve a strong and reliable response rate. Consequently, the Graduate School asks supervisors to talk to students about the purpose of the surveys and to promote them locally (more specific guidance on this is circulated prior to each survey launch).
