Become a PG Mentor

About the scheme

The Postgraduate Community Engagement Team runs a peer mentorship scheme to provide support for postgraduate students – encouraging integration and a vibrant postgraduate experience.

The online forum allows students to either ask a question directly to a selected mentor, or they can ask a question to the whole community, whereby they could receive multiple answers from any postgraduate student at Warwick – emphasising our ethos of ‘community’ while also ensuring focused support is available.

We are looking for a group of engaged and enthusiastic mentors who will draw on their experience of postgraduate life to provide peer-to-peer guidance and support to current postgraduate students.

The mentoring will take place in an online-based community, open to all postgraduate students at Warwick, but it will also involve campus-based elements, such as themed group mentoring sessions, as is seen appropriate and timely by the mentors.

Who are PG Mentors and what do they do?

Postgraduate Mentors are experienced postgraduate students and Early Career Researchers who are working in a team to provide primarily pastoral (but also academic) support, guidance and practical tips on various topics relevant to student life. Mentors will support the scheme by contributing to the online Ask a Postgrad platform, attending campus-based group workshops and, in some cases where appropriate, by offering one-to-one support to their peers.

As a postgraduate mentor, you need to be able to:

  • Attend a campus-based or virtual training session
  • Liaise with the Community Engagement team and other mentors electronically, and through termly catch-up events
  • Take part in at least two campus-based community engagement events per term. (Indicate in your application if you could not participate in this element of the role)
  • Answer students’ questions based on your own experience, making sure you provide accurate information and signpost to other sources, primarily university services
  • Be a positive role-model and support to Warwick postgraduates, contributing to students’ self-esteem, confidence and aspirations through appropriate communications –ensuring you are welcoming, inclusive and encouraging of participation at events
  • Engage in the wider PG conversations via the online platform – maintaining an environment that is friendly, inclusive and professional
  • Promote PG Community Engagement Events through word of mouth, social media and any other relevant methods
  • Be willing to take part in new developments within the mentorship scheme
  • Work independently following training but also closely with the Mentorship Coordinator for the purposes of wider mentorship events
  • Adhere to guidelines and regulations for good conduct and practice set out in training and at any subsequent time. Adhere to all University-wide policies regulating student life at Warwick, including Dignity at Warwick

  • After the completion of the programme you will receive a Certificate of Participation

Knowledge, skills and experience required

This post is open to all postgraduates and ECRs from all departments within the University of Warwick. The role requires the following skills:

  • Be a current postgraduate student/ECR at the University of Warwick
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to empathise with PG students
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by postgraduate students and their life cycle
  • Ability to provide guidance and signposting to individuals, covering a range of academic or pastoral matters (in line with the guidelines and regulations set for good conduct
