The Research Student Skills Programme (RSSP) can provide funding for postgraduate research students wishing to organise a conference, seminar or meeting around your research area.
The application process for 2017-18 is now open and will close no later than 31 May 2018 (or once all available funding has been allocated).
Any bursaries granted will be transferred to your department and must be spent by 31 July 2018 (unless you are advised otherwise by your department).
Please note: this funding is NOT a travel grant to aid you in attending national or international conferences.
How to apply
You will need to apply for the funding to the RSSP providing details of the scope and impact of the activity/event and what skills you and your colleagues envisage developing during the organisational and presentation process.
- Complete the application form and return it to RSSP, Student Careers & Skills, University House, or email it to the RSSP (pgresearchskills at warwick dot ac dot uk).
- Your application must be approved and signed by your Head of Department. Funding is limited to a maximum of £300 per academic department per year.
- Please ensure that it is completed thoroughly otherwise your application may not be accepted.
- You will be notified as to the progress of your application within 4 weeks of submitting it.
Terms and conditions
The purpose of this funding is to enable you, as a research student, to gain transferable skills and experience in planning, coordinating and publicising events, which you will then be able to use in application forms and CVs.
One of the requirements for receiving this funding is that your event/activity should be primarily organised, managed and facilitated by research students from within Warwick (although not necessarily all from your department). You can, of course, have advice and assistance from members of staff and also invite academics to contribute. If you have any queries on this, please contact the RSSP (pgresearchskills at warwick dot ac dot uk).
There are a maximum of 6 bursaries of £300 available. Funding is limited to a maximum of £300 per academic department per year, so please liaise with your colleagues and check with your Head of Department to ensure that your application is successful.
If an event is organised by postgraduate research students from more than one department, it is possible to apply for a maximum of £600 per event. Only one application form is required but must be signed off by a postgraduate research student from EACH department and EACH Head of Department.

What researchers say
View a video by the 2013 History PG Conference team:
We gained excellent knowledge of how to collaboratively manage a long-term project and the time management skills this entails.
We found the experience of organising this event very rewarding. It helped increase our awareness of less familiar aspects of academic events, including the difficulties one may encounter when setting up a conference programme.
I have now set up a website and there is an intention of to hold a similar workshop annually to bring together scholars at Warwick working on this these [Drinking Studies Network].
