On Monday 26 February we’ll be hosting a day of Bone Density Screenings in the Lecture Room above Westwood Games Hall.
Osteoporosis, literally meaning ‘Porous Bones’, is a condition which occurs when the rate of bone renewal doesn’t match the rate of breakdown, eventually resulting in weak, brittle bones. However Osteoporosis doesn’t have any symptoms, unless you break or fracture a bone, meaning many individuals are not diagnosed with the condition until years after they have it, if at all. Often this comes too late for them to have the most effective treatment making preventative action so important.
Each appointment takes 15 minutes, costs £30 and the results of the test and advice are given immediately.
Tracey from Bone Matters will assess your bone density and fracture risk using a ‘Quantative Ultrasound Scanner’ (QUS), a completely safe and painless machine with no side effects. The test measures the bone density in your heel to help asses the risk of you fracturing your legs, arms, hips and wrists – common fracture sites for sufferers of osteoporosis. You’ll simply put each foot inside the machine which grips your heel for about two minutes, and ultrasound waves will pass through it. After the test is completed, your results will be printed off and explained to you.
The test itself isn’t diagnostic but those with low scores can take a copy of their results to their GP who can decide if they need further investigation - speeding up or improving individual’s chances of accessing a more detailed diagnostic test. There will also be time for you to ask questions, if you have any, and you will receive an information pack with evidence-based nutrition, exercise and lifestyle advice to enable you to safeguard yourself against the condition and ensure you have strong and healthy bones for life.
