In game 8 of their BUCS League our #TeamWarwick Men's Hockey 1s beat Nottingham 3s to win Midlands 1A. Check out Club Captain Hugh Williams match report:
We went away to Nottingham for a dark and cold 7pm start knowing that a victory would take us (at worst) 7 points clear in the league with 2 games to play.
We started with a narrow scare when Malte Scherff made a heroic save off the line after an early lapse in concentration from the defence. However, we regained our composure and replied with a scare of our own - Mathias Swerdlow hitting the post.
As a team we built on this intensity and stole the first goal with a deadly shot in the D from our goal scoring machine - Victor Rosenberg. Not long after, we nipped a quick turnover from the opposition push back and after some silky passing in the midfield, James Clarke volleys the ball into the top left corner. 2-0 up with 10 minutes passed. The remainder of the half proved absolutely immense with a goal each from strikers Victor Rosenberg and Mathias Swerdlow. 4-0 at half time and we could sense the victory.
Nottingham stepped up their game after the half time whistle, and we had to ride the pressure in the early part of the second half - defending Penalty Corners and numerous open play attacks. We broke the second half deadlock with a drag flick from Victor Rosenberg that screamed into the left side netting and brought up his hat-trick. Immense! The remainder of the game had two goals for each team including a notable near post deflection from Mathias Swerdlow and another deadly open play reverse hit from Victor.
The final score was 7-2.
4 goals for Victor, 2 for Mathias Swerdlow and 1 for James Clarke. Man of the Match went to Victor for his 4 goals.
Playoffs, The Cup 1/4 Finals and Varsity to Come!
The team wanted to thank their Match Manager Ian Knight, Coach Kali Thaker and S&C Coach Kai Hill.
Since the match report the Men's Hockey 1s played their BUCS Trophy Quarter Finals against GKT Hockey Club from King's College London, finishing with a 2-2 draw and losing out on penalties. To quote the team Twitter account, "In a World Cup year, going out in the quarter finals on penalties is probably the most English thing one can do. Congrats to GKT Hockey on the win."
If you're looking to catch the men in action next they're playing their Varsity fixture against Coventry University on Sat 24 Feb, 8pm at the Westwood Pitches. It'd be great to see everyone out showing their support for the guys and #TeamWarwick!
