The amount of Maintenance Loan you receive is dependent on the household income of whomever you are ordinarily resident with, and where you plan to live whilst studying.

• For the 2023-24 academic year, household income will be taken from the 2021-22 tax year and will depend on the people you live with: your parent(s)/carer(s), your parent/carer and their partner or your partner.
  • In certain circumstances your assessment might be based on your own income, for example, if you are aged over 25 at the start of your course.

• You can use the Student Finance England CalculatorLink opens in a new window to estimate how much Maintenance Loan you could be eligible for.

The below table demonstrates the maintenance loan rates for the 2023-24 academic year based on household income. Please note, the 2023-24 figures are subject to Parliamentary approval. These figures apply to students who are aged under 60 on the first day of their course and who do not qualify for government benefits. If at the end of the academic year, you find you haven't needed all of the loan you have taken, you can consider requesting less for the next academic year. Although Student Finance England will let you know the maximum Maintenance Loan you are eligible for, you don't have to take the full amount. You can also make repayments to your student loan at any time, so you can repay the unpaid amount if you want.

You can choose to make extra repayments towards your student loan. These would be in addition to the repayments you must make when your income is over the threshold amount (set at £25,000 from 1 August 2023 - i.e., Plan 5 Student Loan).

However, you should only make extra repayments if you think you can pay off the full balance before the loan term ends. This is because your loan will be written off at the end of the term (40 years from 1 August 2023 - i.e., Plan 5 Student Loan).

Once you have applied for your Tuition Fee Loan and means-tested Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England (SFE), we are notified by Student Finance England if your household income is under the bursary threshold. We then check some further criteria and notify you if you are eligible for the Warwick Bursary. We will start making these checks and informing eligible students at the end of August 2023.

If you meet further additional criteria (e.g., receive the Childcare Grant from SFE) you would also be eligible for the Additional Bursary. In some situations, once you have received confirmation of your Warwick Bursary eligibility you will need to submit an application for the Additional Bursary yourself as Student Funding Support do not receive information from SFE regarding all of the Additional Bursary criteria (e.g., students who receive Disabled Students Allowance from SFE will need to submit an application).

European Union (EU) Undergraduates usually must have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme to get student finance. Eligible EU students can apply for a loan to help with the cost of Tuition Fees. Eligible EU students who meet additional residency criteria may also be eligible for a loan to assist with living costs. Funding opportunities for international students may be sourced through organisations in the students' home country. There is funding available for the Graduate Entry Medicine course, which varies by year of study.

In the first year, eligible students can receive funding for their Tuition Fees ( a proportion of which must be self-funded) and living costs from Student Finance England (SFE). In the first year, eligible students can also receive grants from SFE as well as the Warwick Bursary and the Additional Bursary.

In years 2-4, eligible students predominantly receive funding from the NHS Bursary Authority (including grants). Eligible students can receive a reduced-rate Maintenance Loan from SFE in years 2-4 but are not eligible for the Warwick Bursary or the Additional Bursary.

Many students do choose to work alongside studying. It will depend on the intensity of your course as to whether you have the time to work, but we would suggest speaking with your department and student ambassadors to establish this.

Students who already have a part-time job in their home town in a chain restaurant/ shop are sometimes able to transfer to a location near to campus. Alternatively, students are sometimes able to negotiate with their employers to only work during the holiday breaks when they are home from University.

Each Scholarship and Bursary will have a different application form and deadline. These applications will be submitted to different colleagues across the University, therefore you will need to get in touch with the relevant person of contact for your specific Scholarship or Bursary.

The Warwick Bursary (and Additional Bursary) is the responsibility of Student Funding Support. We will start carrying out eligibility checks and notifying eligible students who have a completed Student Finance England application from the end of August 2023. If your Student Finance England application is still in progress at the end of August 2023 you should expect to hear from us within 8 weeks of your application being complete. If you are required to submit an Independent School application for the main Warwick Bursary or an Additional Bursary application (assuming your Student Finance England application has been completed and means-tested) you should expect to hear from us within 4 weeks of submission, provided you have submitted the relevant evidence correctly.

Your fee status is usually determined when you start your course, so if you start as an International student you would continue to be that for the duration of your course. Student Finance England will also base your eligibility for student loans on your status at the start of your course so even if your status changes during your course you won't become eligible for the Tuition Fee and/or Maintenance Loan. You will need to have secured most Scholarships and/or Bursaries prior to starting your course. Your department may pay awards to students in subsequent years for various reasons but this would be department dependent.
