Sustainable Coventry and Behavioural Science

Hi Everyone,

Sustainable Coventry is setting up a meeting with Warwick academics and local Midlands council leaders and other representatives from he community. It would be ideal if we can get a few representatives from the BBS GRP who can showcase ideas/research that would help Coventry move towards more sustainable goals.

As I understand it this is an opportunity to see where Behavioural Science can have an impact on the ground within our local community.

I've copied in Parmjit Dhugga's email below which has more information. The GRP can also provide funding to help if this is needed.

If you have something you could present, please contact me and/or Parmjit.

Thank you,

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I am happy for researchers within the GRP to deliver any type of activity that will help to showcase the GRP expertise available to the region with a view to securing future collaborations and help the regional agencies and bodies to deliver solutions.

The activity could simply be a talk, or a panel discussion, or a workshop to gather further information. Professor Jackie Hodgson and I are truly open-minded regarding the event(s) that a GRP wants to bring to the Summit. We are also happy for colleagues to deliver activities in tandem with research partners and other collaborators. I also don't mind if colleagues repurpose activities originally designed for other forums, but we really should be seeking to derive additional value as a consequence of engaging with regional decision-makers at the Summit.

If it would help to have a quick telephone conversation, feel free to give me a call on 07813 669 674. I'm happy to take calls out of 'office hours'.

Best Regards,

Hi everyone,

Join this cross-disciplinary event to find out more about the interconnections between the Covid-19 pandemic and the interdisciplinary research carried out at Warwick.

The purpose of this event is to:

Shed light on the lived experiences of Warwick researchers and sharing research lessons learnt from navigating the pandemic.

Facilitate conversations and find synergies of interest which could lead to joint bidding on interdisciplinary research projects.

Building interdisciplinary research networks for impact and meaningful collaboration.

We are working on a project with one of our clients, a leading global packaging and paper manufacturer and would like to conduct a research project looking at the barriers that are stopping people from producing waste and not recycling more.

It’s well documented that consumer awareness of the problem of waste is high and when asked consumers say they want to waste less and recycle more. But there is still a huge amount of packaging that goes into landfill. There is a gap between awareness and action. We want to investigate why this is the case and how different organisations can work together to change it.

We are interested in approaching this issue in a broader context of better management of all resources and food waste. In particular we are interested in looking at the issue at a pan-European level and ultimately coming up with a mixture of policy recommendations and small ‘nudges’ that could be implemented by manufacturers/ CPG businesses/ retailers etc. at the consumer level. .

Is this something you would be interested in helping us with? If so, it would be great to discuss further, get some ball park costs and idea of the timescale for a project like this.

All the best
Frank Bruce

Coventry City of Culture and Behavioural Science

Hi Everyone,

Below I'm forwarding a call for people interested in organizing events for the Coventry City of Culture. There are a number of possibilities listed and potentially funding for involvement. See if any of these strike your fancy.

Best wishes, Thomas

Forwarded email begins here:

Hello all,

Hope you’re well and have had / are having a good summer.

I’ve been approached by the organisers of the City of Culture opening event to see if we can contribute to their preparations.

The event itself will be on a truly massive scale – they’re looking for over 10,000 contributions towards a giant spectacle including processions, installations, projections and more across the City and around the ring road. (You can get a sense of some of their early planning in the attached PPT).

The key themes they are looking at are Invention, Sustainability and Peace – all things that the University can contribute to.

Obviously this is a huge opportunity for the University to be involved across lots of different aspects, including: -

Running making workshops in the run up to the

Working with artists to produce large scale artworks, floats, installations etc. (might be good student projects?)

Working with artists on projections across the city

Taking part in the event itself

Showcasing innovative technology – autonomous pods, electric bikes, VR, cars etc

Performances and contributions from student societies, drama, music, sports (cycling!) etc.

…and anything else you can think of!

I’m hoping that you will be happy for me to put you in touch with the event producers to discuss how we can be involved. I am currently putting together a list of people who are happy to be contacted to find out more – please just reply to this email saying that you would like to be involved and feel free to include any initial ideas or contributions you might have.

Please do pass this on to anyone else who you think would be likely to be interested or might have something to offer.

As always, if you have any questions, just drop me an email.

Best wishes,

St. James Place Funded Research Opportunity

forwarded from Dr. Sarah Ruggins, St. James Place: (if you reach out to Sarah, please let me, Thomas Hills, know).

I’m reaching out on behalf of St. James’s Place – we are one of the UK’s largest wealth managers with a specialised Corporate Responsibility programme that delivers financial education workshops to over 7,000 young adults per year. In my role as Head of Impact Research, I am searching for an academic institution that is able to design & deliver a longitudinal study for us about the impact of financial education on spending and savings behaviours of marginalised youth. I have provided some background below.

I am currently leading an initiative to collate our social value activities under an impact framework that evidences non-financial value creation for our firm. One of our major initiatives is our Financial Education programme – we deliver financial education workshops to over 7,000 students a year across Primary, Year 9, and Sixth Form. This is a volunteer-led programme, where our 2,000 staff and 5,000 financial advisors deliver the programmes across the UK.

We would like to fund a longitudinal study to assess the impact that our financial education programme has on young people – does it change spending and savings behaviours in meaningful ways over time? We would like to use this study to begin an engagement process with local government. Specifically, we would like to petition for a more advanced financial education curriculum in schools by using an evidence-led narrative.

I’m curious to explore whether anyone at Warwick would be interested in engaging in a funded study for us. We would be delighted to discuss at your convenience if you feel this may be of interest to your researchers.

We have a healthy multi-year budget agreed by our Board for the project; I am happy to discuss this in due course if the project is deemed suitable/of interest to your researchers.

We have 5 years of historical data but it is quite patchy and doesn’t capture what we are now trying to evidence, which is changed behaviours/attitudes towards money, particularly for marginalised youth. We would therefore like to fund the project design, data collection, and analysis (in the form of a white paper if possible). Depending on costs and resources, I am happy to work in collaboration with the research team as I myself have a doctorate in sociology.

We can supply the schools and the financial education curriculum.

Call outline (from UKRI)

Proposals are invited for short-term projects addressing and mitigating the health, social, economic, cultural and environmental impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak in Low and Middle Income Countries1.

This call is funded through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Newton Fund. These Funds address global challenges through disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and strengthen capability for research and innovation within both the UK and developing countries, providing an agile response to emergencies where there is an urgent research need. These Funds form part of the UK's Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.

Researchers holding existing UKRI GCRF grants should in the first instance consider whether they could repurpose that funding to address the objectives of this call. You can apply to switch your existing funding here. Repurposing your existing grant is the quickest way to start the research.

• Project length: up to 18 months

• Eligibility: UK applicants must be eligible to receive Research Council funding.

• Funding: 80% of the full economic cost (fEC) for Research Council funding.

• The primary benefit of proposals should be to any Low and Middle income Countries (LMICs) likely to be negatively impacted by COVID-19.

• Award range: there is no specific budget for this call. We are interested in funding research of any scale that can demonstrate it will deliver impact during the lifetime of the project.

COVID-19 is fundamentally a global crisis. The pandemic presents an unprecedented challenge, threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions of people around the world. While the epicentre of the pandemic is currently focused around Europe and the US, a growing number of cases are reported in Africa, the Middle East, and Central, South America and Asia with potentially serious social, economic and political consequences for these regions. Some of the poorest societies in the world will be the least prepared and most vulnerable to the effects of the virus. Other Low and Middle Income Countries may however have experiences, for example from TB / HIV / Ebola, of responding to epidemics from which they and the rest of the world can learn.

UKRI will support excellent proposals which meet at least one of the following:

• New research or innovation with a clear pathway to impact on policy or practice that has the potential (within the period of the award) to deliver a significant contribution to the understanding of, response to, and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in a developing country context.

• Supports the manufacture and/or wide scale adoption of an intervention with significant potential for impact in developing countries.

• Gathers critical data and resources quickly for future research use.

[DEADLINE 30 APRIL] C19 Secondment opportunity - Government Office for Science

I'm contacting you in this instance on behalf of the Government Office for Science, which is currently looking for experts who might consider short term secondments to the Government to assist with the response to C19.

The Government Office for Science is playing a central role in the Government’s response to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Through the Science Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) mechanism, GO-Science is providing coordinated advice to Government on the scientific aspects of the outbreak, led by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) Sir Patrick Vallance.

The work may involve addressing a range of responsibilities, including supporting expert meetings and sub-groups, tracking and summarising key research and scientific developments and liaising with a wider network of experts (inside and outside Government) to understand the latest picture on the virus.

GO-Science is looking for additional people (see attached job descriptions) to join the team for an initial period of 3 months, with an option to extend, to provide specialist scientific advice and support to a team of predominantly civil servants. Ideally we would be able to secure someone who can commit a substantial part of their week to the work, but we can be flexible based on individual circumstances and part-time and flexible working are options. Following UK Government guidance, GO-Science is working remotely apart from essential business. There is no expectation individuals in this new role will be required to go into our London office and all new starters will be provided the necessary equipment to work from home.

With regard to funding, academics currently embedded within SAGE subgroups are funded by GO-Science (salary and expenses) via secondment agreements with their universities for the time spent working in the group. More specific details of the funding that can be provided by GO-Science can be discussed at the stage at which candidates are selected for phone interviews, along with time requirements each week and length of agreement.

If you have anybody who you think has the relevant experience and availability, we would welcome Expressions of Interest (EOIs) with a short summary of the person’s professional background and experience. EOIs should be sent by close of play on Thursday 30th April to:

For the International Team expert: alice.moden@go-science.gov.uk and linda.newman@go-science.gov.uk;

For the Behavioural Team expert: adam.eccles@beis.gov.uk and marie-louise.taylor@go-science.gov.uk.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Best wishes,

Ben

Warwick internal RDF pump priming applications deadline 4pm Tuesday 30th June 2020

Warwick’s Research Development Fund (Strategic Awards) is now open to applications.

The scheme provides pump-priming funds for project proposals to enhance the University's capacity and capability to undertake world-class, pioneering research.

This annual competition provides up to £25,000 for the development of new research initiatives that are innovative and strategic in nature.

Projects can vary in size and interdisciplinary proposals are particularly welcomed. They must clearly articulate how they will lead directly to future bids for external funding. The deadline for applications is 4pm on Tuesday 30 June 2020 and project spend will need to be incurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. Note: the project time frames have been shifted due to the current health emergency.

Further information and application forms are available at the following website https://warwick.ac.uk/services/ris/researchstrategy/researchfunding/rdf/. Applications should be directed to warwickRDF@warwick.ac.uk. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by October 2020.
