      <title>CHM seeks Research Fellow for 'Prisoners' project</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;CHM invites applications for a Research Fellow for the project 'Prisoners, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland, 1850-2000'.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Research Fellow will conduct a specified programme of research on &amp;lsquo;Women, Health and Maternity in the English and Irish Criminal Justice Systems&amp;rsquo;, involving independent and collaborative historical research in archives and libraries in England and Ireland, along lines agreed with the project&amp;rsquo;s PIs. The Research Fellow will also advance and organise public outreach activities central to the project. The post will be based at the Centre for the History of Medicine (CHM), University of Warwick, and supervised by Professor Marland. This is a 3-year post, funded by the Wellcome Trust.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Postdoctoral Research Fellow opportunity at CHM</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt; The Warwick University History Department seeks to appoint a one-year, full-time, postdoctoral Research Fellow as part of the Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award, &amp;lsquo;The Cultural History of the NHS&amp;rsquo;, a collaborative project between Principal Investigators Roberta Bivins and Mathew Thomson of CHM. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The project runs for 5 years, and a full-time Research Fellow is sought for 1 year commencing after 1 March 2015. The postholder will be based at Warwick, and should expect both to travel for research and to attend regular team meetings on campus.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Fixed term contract for 1 year.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt; Closing date: 15 Feb 2015&lt;br /&gt;

                &lt;p class="newsItemTitle"&gt;The Centre is pleased to announce that John Christie will now be joining the Centre as an Associate Member. &lt;/p&gt;

                &lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/history/chm/news/john_r_2.doc"&gt;John R. R. Christie&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, spent much of his career (1973-2006) in the Division of the History and Philosophy of Science, University of Leeds, teaching history of science, medicine and technology, and additional courses in the departments of History, Philosophy and English. He is now a member of the Faculty of History, University of Oxford, and in 2010 was a Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institut fur Wissenschaftsgeschichte,                   &lt;STATE st="on"&gt;&lt;/STATE&gt;
Berlin. His early research was on the socio-politiical, institutional and intellectual history of science and medicine in the Scottish Enlightenment. Latterly he has returned to Enlightenment studies, working on the place of science and medicine in English Enlightened Dissent (Joseph Priestley, John Jebb et.al.), on medico-chemical theories of animal heat in C18th. Scotland, and on what happens to the Scottish medico-chemical curriculum in the Atlantic world, as it is developed and altered in late colonial and revolutionary America. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;span _mce_type="bookmark"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;                 &lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;John recently hosted a very successful History of Medicine Research Seminar, 'Agonism and Emulation: Medical Student Cultures in C18th. Edinburgh' and is an active member of the Centre community. The Centre is delighted to continue working with John and looks forward to future collaborations.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Dr Elfed Huw Price - New Associate Member of the CHM</title>

      <description>&lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;span id="_end" _mce_type="bookmark"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;The Centre is pleased to announce that Dr Elfed Huw Price will now be joining the Centre as an Associate Member. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Elfed Huw Price is a historian of medicine with interests in neuroscience. From 1998 to 2006 Dr Price was based at the University of Oxford. In his doctoral thesis, &amp;ldquo;The Emergence of the Doctrine of the &amp;lsquo;Sentient Brain&amp;rsquo; in Britain, 1650-1850,&amp;rdquo; he explored the reasons for the rise of brain-based theories of mind to the status of mainstream medical orthodoxy. After a year working on the &lt;a href="http://www.leprosyhistory.org/"&gt;ILA Global Project for the History of Leprosy&lt;/a&gt;, and a semester lecturing on the History of Medicine at the University of Southampton, Dr Price joined Oxford University Press in 2008, where he is now Publisher responsible for 26 Social Sciences, Linguistics and Philosophy journals. He continues to pursue his own work during the twilight hours and his current research focuses on the theories of mind and body expounded by the Victorian polymath, George Henry Lewes. &lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Dr Claire Jones - New Associate Member of the CHM</title>

      <description>&lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;The Centre is pleased to announce that Dr Claire Jones will now be joining the Centre as an Associate Member having previous worked as a research assistant within the department.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="newsItemAbstract"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/history/chm/people/pdf/clairejones/"&gt;Dr Claire Jones&lt;/a&gt; is currently Learning and Access Officer at the University of Worcester, where she is working on HLF funded project to establish a permanent exhibition of health and medicine. The exhibition, due to open in July 2012, will be housed in Worcester's former eighteenth century hospital and will be accompanied by a wide range of events, conferences and workshops relating to the history of medicine and wellbeing. Claire also continues her Warwick research on contraception and the relationship between medicine and commerce.&lt;/p&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;The Centre is pleased to announce that the former Honorary Fellow, Professor David Wright will now be joining the Centre as a new Associate Member.&lt;/p&gt;

  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;David Wright&lt;/strong&gt; has been appointed Professor of History and Canada Research Chair in the History of Health Policy at McGill University in Montreal. At McGill, David will continue to explore his two areas of primary research interest: the history of mental hospitals in the nineteenth-century British World and, secondly, the globalization of health human resources in the second half of the twentieth century. &lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;
