History Graduate success

We are pleased to announce that two of our recently graduated students have won prizes from British American Nineteenth Century Historians (BrANCH) this year. They are:

Isa Seedat – Isa won the Kinder Fellowship at Missouri - https://www.branch.org.uk/kinderbranchfellowship . This is the third time in recent years our students have been awarded the scholarship.

Emmanuel-Jeremiah Abass – ‘Highly Commended’ for the Harriet Tubman Essay prize - https://www.branch.org.uk/tubmanessayprize

Global History Prize dissertation 2021-22 published

History Alumna Freya Rowson exhibit at the Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 Exhibition

History Alumna Freya Rowson has won a competition by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), with the Royal School of Drawing, to create portraits of Holocaust survivors to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2023.

Freya created a portrait of survivor Rudolf Brazda, the last known Holocaust survivor who was deported on charges of homosexuality, and was not only a winner but was asked by the HMDT if they could exhibit their work in the Houses of Parliament as part of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023. This work was one of only two competition entries chosen to be exhibited, and is being displayed alongside portraits of genocide survivors taken by renowned photographer Rankin.

A massive congratulations to Freya on their success in the competition!

Humfrey Butters (1946-2019)

It is with sadness that we report the death of Humfrey Butters following a short illness. Those of us who knew him will have many memories of his many years of service in the department. It goes without saying that the Venice programme stands as an enduring reminder of his contributions to the university. He will be greatly missed. There will be a small family funeral followed by a memorial service later in the year. Some memories of Humfrey are gathered here.

Former undergraduate student Jo-Ann Owusu turned her excellent BA dissertation from the ‘HI31Z Sexualities, Ethnicity, Class: Reinterpreting the Holocaust’ module into an essay in History Today.

University Alumnus of the Month: Ruth Lemon (MA History 2013-15)

Ruth Lemon (MA History 2013-15) graduated from Warwick in July 2015, and is featured this month as the Warwick University Alumnus of the Month. She has been living in Cambodia for the past 18 months where she teaches English part time. She has volunteered and worked at Sovann Komar’s Children Village sporadically since 2009. Sovann Komar is an orphanage, home to 55 children who live with surrogate parents in a safe, clean, village-like community. She now runs SKOPE (Sovann Komar Outreach Program for Education) which is the part of their charity seeking to help others outside their orphanage. They locate poor, rural schools and provide vital education supplies such as exercise books, water wells, toilet blocks, teaching equipment, and stationery.
