SCFS host international ‘Nurturing Hope’ conference on Liberal Education, Democracy, and Designing Sustainable Futures

On 8th-9th May 2025, the Liberal Arts department and the School for Cross Faculty Studies ran an international conference titled ‘Nurturing Hope: Liberal Education, Democracy, and Designing Sustainable Futures,’ which aimed to demonstrate how even 2,000 years later, Liberal Arts education can still provide valuable critical tools for addressing modern-day problems from the very local (Warwick) to the global. The conference was planned as part of the University of Warwick’s 60th year anniversary celebrations and looks forward to the Liberal Arts department’s 10th year anniversary – which it will be entering in 2026.

School for Cross-Faculty Studies welcomes Architectural History Expert for Engaging Workshops

On 13th November 2024 our Liberal Arts and Global Sustainable Development departments collaborated with leading theorist and historian Francesco Proto to run a series of workshops for students and staff around the concepts of Baudrillard and the hyperreal, along with an overview of Francesco’s theoretical work and his recently published book.

Dr Bryan Brazeau, Head of Liberal Arts headed to Nashville earlier this month for the inaugural Liberal Arts Summit organised by Times Higher Education.

Focusing on Liberal Arts education and innovation in the digital age, the Summit - hosted in partnership with Vanderbilt University - gathered leading voices from higher education and other sectors to reimagine the future of liberal arts education in an increasingly digital world.

Research funding success for School for Cross-faculty Studies students

Congratulations to our students for securing funding for research projects over the summer!

The Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS) enables undergraduate students to carry out an interdisciplinary summer research public engagement project. The scheme is open to any undergraduate student at Warwick and research can be completed in the UK or abroad.

This year, one student from the Liberal Arts Department and five students from the Global Sustainable Development (GSD) Department have successfully secured a URSS bursary. Their work will be recognised at the URSS Showcase 2022 on Wednesday 16 November between 1-4 pm in the Panorama room in the Rootes Building - all are welcome to attend!

Dr Bryan Brazeau participates in conference at the Newberry Library

On the 14th and 15th April 2022, Dr Bryan Brazeau (Associate Professor, Liberal Arts) participated in Processing the Pandemic I: Loss at the Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois. Bryan was one of the three co-organisers of the conference, along with Dr Rose Miron (Director of the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies at the Newberry Library) and Dr Christopher Fletcher (Assistant Director of the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies).

Upcoming Talk by Dr Kirsten Harris for the Resonate Festival

To celebrate Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture, the University of Warwick – a principal partner of City of Culture – has been hosting The Resonate Festival. Next week marks the grand finale of the festival: three days of special events taking place on campus from 19-21 April 2022.

Dr Kirsten Harris, Associate Professor in Liberal Arts, will be contributing to the festival on Thursday evening, sharing her thoughts on the disputed concept of freedom.

Susanne Choi Yuk Ping

Susanne Choi Yuk Ping is Professor at the Department of Sociology and the Co-Director of the Gender Research Centre at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her D.Phil. in Sociology from Nuffield College, University of Oxford. Susanne uses a feminist lens to explore a diverse set of issues related to migration, gender, sexuality, family, work, and social movements in Chinese societies. Her lead–authored book Masculine Compromise (published by University of California Press) explores how men’s rural to urban migration shapes gender and family dynamics in post-socialist China. Her articles were published by American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Marriage and Family, Sociology, British Journal of Sociology, Social Science and Medicine, Sociology of Health and Illness, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, The China Quarterly, Work, Employment and Society, Gender, Work and Organization, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies among others.
