The annual call to nominate WIHEA Fellows is now open. Faculty Chairs, the Registrar, University Librarian, HR Director and the Student Union (SU) are amongst those currently being invited to nominate new Fellows and existing fellows and members are being informed that the process of recruitment has started. The call is open across the university so that individuals can also now apply. Applicants or nominees will be expected to show a record of commitment to learning and teaching, some experience of leading good practice development for instance through projects, mentoring or curriculum development and indicate where they feel they have specific expertise to offer by providing a statement. They should also demonstrate that they will be able to invest some time and effort into taking on the responsibilities and leadership that comes with being a Fellow. As part of the appointment process, the Academy requires confirmation from the relevant Head of Department or Professional Service whether they support a Fellowship appointment. The Academy’s internal advisory group will make the final selection before the end of August 2017.

The visit is being hosted by Prof Sarah Stewart-Brown, Professor in Public Health at Warwick Medical School.

Dr Hassed was one of the pioneers of mindfulness teaching in medicine, who embarked on the development and delivery of a wellbeing and mindfulness module in the late 1990's at the same time as one or two pioneers in the US. Although starting with elective modules for both students and GP's as the US pioneers were doing, Dr Hassed went on to develop a core curricululum course for the first two semesters of the medical school course. He was first in the world to do this and has been instrumental in introducing a variety of innovations into medical education and practice in Australia and overseas, with an emphasis on the application of holistic, integrative and mind-body medicine in medical practice.

HEFCE funding success: Student engagement and interdisciplinary learning

Dr Georgia Kremmyda and Dr Volkan Degirmenci have won funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Catalyst Fund for their project Developing a student-driven educational model between, beyond and across disciplines.

The project will develop a conceptual model for exploring the ways in which students act as co-producers of learning, and how they might work beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. Project partners are Professor Gwen Van der Velden (Warwick International Higher Education Academy), Dr Nicholas Monk (Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning) and Professor Colin Eddie (UnPS Ltd). With a total value of £99,490 the project will take 18 months to complete.

Chris Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) commented:

Considering the competitive nature of Catalyst Funding, I really want to congratulate the team on this achievement. It's an imaginative bid on both student engagement and interdisciplinarity and therefore fits in very well with the key characteristics of a Warwick education. Humanitarian Engineering itself is already a highly innovative field, but this bid adds a whole new dimension to interdisciplinary curriculum development."

In addition to designing and delivering blended intercultural training for professionals and students across disciplines and international, Dr Reissner-Roubicek's expertise in intercultural competence in applied settings is highly relevant to current work at Monash University. In particular, the focus on developing interventions to increase students ability to apply and articulate intercultural competence.

Funded through the Monash Warwick Visiting Educator Scheme, Dr Reissner-Roubicek's visit to Monash University at the begining of May 2017, will extend the collaboration with Dr Normand-Marconnet which was formed through the Monash Warwick Alliance Intercultural Competence project in 2016, when a three-stage training programme for students on study abroad was piloted and the project created a Train the Trainer resource for educators. The visit supports the continuing rollout of this training at Monash by building capacity in the post-experience section of the programme to help students' articulate their learning outcomes to employers and also contribute to the Monash Intercultural Competence Strategy by sharing a model of curricular skills development in intercultural teamwork that is applicable to educators in quantative disciplines.

During her visit, Dr Reissner-Roubicek will deliver a workshop to staff to introduce the interactive, digital learning resource and attend a networking breakfast for staff and students which will feature Intercultural Competence and Graduate Employability.
