      <title>In 10 years has anything changed for Women and Girls in Science?</title>

      <description>&lt;div class="news-thumbnail" style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 5px;"&gt;&lt;img class="thumbnail" width="100" height="100" src="https://warwick.ac.uk/sitebuilder2/file/fac/sci/lifesci/news?sbrPage=%2Ffac%2Fsci%2Flifesci%2Fnews&amp;newsItem=8ac672c794f32b910194f47bb35d0246" alt="image"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Today marks 10 years since the UN announced the first International Day of Women and Girls in Science to highlight the gender gap in STEM-related fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and the slow progress of women into senior positions. As of 2023, the number of women graduates in STEM had increased by 5% to just 35% since 2014, when the Awareness Day launched.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dr Melissa Webby, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, has been featured in a series compiled by the University of Warwick to mark the day, sharing her experience of nurturing talent in girls and women in STEM.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="https://warwick.ac.uk/newsandevents/expertcomment/melissa-webby-women-in-science/"&gt;Find out about Melissa's experiences&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

      <title>ENABLE workshop: Are the university learning environments as inclusive as we think?</title>

      <description>&lt;p style="text-align: start;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/lifesci/news/enable.jpg?maxWidth=250&amp;amp;maxHeight=250" rel="lightbox[all]" title="Lecture theatre with students"&gt;&lt;img src="https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/lifesci/news/enable.jpg?maxWidth=250" alt="Lecture theatre with students" style="margin-right: 6px;" align="left" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;On Friday 29 September 2023, the School of Life Sciences will be hosting a free workshop: &amp;quot;Are the university learning environments as inclusive as we think? An investigation from the awarding perspective&amp;quot;.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Based on a thorough data analysis from recent years and first-hand practical experience, the workshop will identify existing reasons for lack of inclusivity and unbiased awarding in biological science and related degree streams.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The workshop participants, comprising academic leaders, teaching professionals and a diverse student community, will also provide on consensus recommendations on how to close existing awarding gaps for a more inclusive learning and teaching environment throughout the UK.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Consensus recommendations will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>School of Life Sciences achieves Athena SWAN silver charter award to 2022</title>

The charter mark is an important indicator of work undertaken to address gender equality in academia and professional and support roles.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the same round the University retained its Silver award and Politics and International Studies (PAIS) received a Bronze award.&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Head of Life Sciences shortlisted for BBSRC Innovation Award</title>

&lt;p&gt;Nominated in the &amp;lsquo;Social Impact&amp;rsquo; category, Professor Green&amp;rsquo;s research has led to halving the level of lameness in sheep flocks - from ten percent to five percent - in a decade, saving a million sheep a year from becoming lame.&lt;/p&gt;
