Congratulations to Dr Han Zhang, Associate Professor (Reader) in Multifunctional Polymers and Composites at WMG, who has been awarded the 2026 Beilby Medal and Prize. One of the most distinguished awards in science, the Beilby Medal and Prize is awarded annually to a scientist or engineer whose work has exceptional practical significance in chemical engineering, applied science, energy efficiency, or a related field.

Double industry award success for WMG partnerships

WMG is celebrating significant success after two collaborative projects, AeroMC and ZEST, secured major wins at the 2025 Aerospace Technology and Innovation Awards. Hosted by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) as part of its annual conference, the awards recognise the pioneering research and development projects paving the way for zero-carbon aviation. This year, WMG was part of the winning projects that scooped the Team Award and the Shaping the Future Award, highlighting its leading role in advanced manufacturing and sustainable aerospace technology.

University of Warwick and Tata Group win Bhattacharyya Award

The University of Warwick and the Tata Group have won the Royal Academy of Engineering’s highly esteemed Bhattacharyya Award for their pioneering partnership.

Launched in 2019 to honour the late Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya — founder of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), University of Warwick — the award recognises long-term, impactful collaboration between academia and industry, and celebrates the projects that help make our world a better, more sustainable place.

The award is a testament to the commitment of both the University and Tata Group to pushing boundaries, driving innovation, and delivering high-level research, whilst helping secure the future of UK industry globally.

WMG celebrates shortlist nomination at THE awards

WMG’s Waste2Race project has been shortlisted for a 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Award in the Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year category.

Waste2Race joins three other University of Warwick initiatives on the shortlist.

Over 120 institutions submitted more than 500 entries this year, with 69 of them making the final shortlist across 21 highly competitive categories. University of Warwick stands out as one of only five institutions to receive four nominations, showcasing the breadth of its excellence across teaching, research, knowledge exchange, and student support.

The Awards followed the Faraday Institution Conference, which was held from 9-11 September, at the University of Warwick. The conference showcased cutting-edge research, with a strong emphasis on collaboration across academia, industry, and policy in pursuit of a net-zero future.

WMG trailblazer honoured as a National Teaching Fellow

The Advance HE Teaching Excellence Awards are among the most prestigious in the world of higher education — and WMG, University of Warwick, is proud to share that one of its own, Dr Freeha Azmat, has been honoured this year.

An Associate Professor and Reader in Engineering Education at WMG, Dr Azmat has been named a National Teaching Fellow for her outstanding innovations in engineering education and curriculum design, as well as her steadfast commitment to inclusion.

Freeha is now one of only three academics at WMG to have received Advance HE’s National Teaching Fellowship Award; she joins Professor Robin Clark, Pro-Dean International, and Professor Margaret Low, Director of Outreach and Participation, as a fellow.

Research Fellow named as 2024 ‘Top Scholar’

Female apprentices recognised at Autocar Great Women: Rising Stars awards

Congratulations to a group of female engineering students who have been named as finalists at the Autocar Great Women: Rising Stars awards.

There was a total of seven WMG Degree Apprenticeship students, recognised in the Apprentice category, with six employed by JLR and one from Bentley.

Three of the students, Erin Purewal; Amy Flavell and Keishe Gopikrishna, are studying on the BSc Digital and Technology Solutions (DTSLink opens in a new window) programme.

A further four, Alexandra Spurway, Beth Daniel, Charlotte Bradford and Emily Ruscoe, are studying on the BEng Applied Professional Engineering Programme (APEPLink opens in a new window) programme.

Cyber Security graduate wins prestigious Fred Piper Award

Edward Motson, a BSc Cyber Security graduate from WMG at The University of Warwick, was named as the Fred Piper Award Winner at ‘CIISec LIVE’ in Bristol.

In honour of Professor Fred Piper, this national award is presented by The Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec) to celebrate outstanding students, not only for academic achievements but for contributions to the cyber community too.

Those nominated for the Fred Piper Award have previously been awarded the titles of Best Student or Best Project by CIISec’s Academic Partners, as part of CIISec's Student of the Year Awards.
