Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) strengthened its regional, national and global relationships throughout March, meeting MPs, international university representatives, and business leaders.

The meetings highlight WMG’s crucial role in bridging the gap between academia and industry, as well as its strong commitment to collaboration and innovation.

In February, representatives from Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) met with MPs; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) leaders; and international guests, including colleagues from the PNB Research Institute in Singapore and Osaka University in Japan.

Celebrating women and girls in science

In celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science (Wednesday 11 February 2026), the Outreach and Widening Participation team at WMG hosted a special event at Coventry Transport Museum to encourage young women to pursue science. Over 180 female students from local primary and secondary schools came together to discover and celebrate the achievements of women, past and present, who have helped forge a path for today’s scientists, engineers, and technicians.

WMG’s AI Day connects students with industry innovation

Academics at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) hosted the department’s first dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) day, at the University of Warwick, in collaboration with NVIDIA and Dell Technologies.

With AI rapidly transforming industries and reshaping research, innovation, and skills development worldwide, the event was spearheaded by Dr Awinder Kaur, Head of Digital Technologies and Machine Intelligence across all education programmes at WMG.

Following discussions with representatives from NVIDIA and Dell about WMG’s AI vision, Dr Kaur identified the need for a strategic academia-industry engagement event focusing solely on AI.

During January, representatives from WMG met with MPs, local government officials, as well as staff and students from the WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Solihull, strengthening relationships across education, industry, and government.

Celebrating graduation at WMG

WMG staff and students came together to honour the outstanding achievements of the class of 2026 at University of Warwick’s Winter Graduation.

Graduation is a defining moment in the University’s calendar — and the culmination of ambition, resilience, and hard work.

This year’s winter celebrations saw more than 1,100 WMG students receive their degrees.

Developing the UK's engineering and manufacturing talent

The UK is facing a skills crisis, making skills-based education more important than ever. Earlier this month, a delegation from Skills England and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) visited WMG to see how it’s helping to prepare the workforce of tomorrow.

Welcomed by WMG’s Dr Benjamin Silverstone, Head of Skills Policy and Strategy, the delegation consisted of Katherine Green, DWP’s new Director General; Gemma Marsh, Deputy CEO of Skills England; and Mark Foley, Deputy Director of Work-based Skills at DWP. Their visit was an opportunity to showcase WMG’s role in supporting skills development by connecting industry with academia through world-leading education programmes and apprenticeships.

WMG alumni return to celebrate 60 years of Warwick and 45 years of WMG

WMG marked a milestone in the University of Warwick’s 60th anniversary by welcoming alumni from across the globe back to campus for a special event celebrating the department’s 45th anniversary.

The gathering, hosted by Professor Kerry Kirwan, Dean of WMG, who is also an alumnus of the department, brought together graduates to reflect on WMG’s evolution, global reach, and vision for the future.

Alumni were offered a firsthand look at WMG’s cutting-edge research and student-led projects. Presentations included Professor Siddartha Khastgir, Head of Safe Autonomy, on sustainable mobility and autonomous systems; and Chief Engineer Dr James Meredith, who showcased WMG’s hydrogen-powered race car fuelled by sewage, Waste2Race.

Students from Warwick Moto, Warwick Racing, and the Warwick Submarine team also explained more about their projects and the hands-on, industry-focused learning that continues to define the WMG experience. Alumni were invited to share memories of projects, teamwork, and late nights whilst, reconnecting with colleagues and former classmates.

WMG responds to industry demand with new robotics degree

WMG has launched a new undergraduate programme, BEng Robotics Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI), expanding its undergraduate education portfolio. The course has been developed in response to significant technological transformations across industry, driven by the increasing use of robotics and AI.

University of Warwick and Tata Group win Bhattacharyya Award

The University of Warwick and the Tata Group have won the Royal Academy of Engineering’s highly esteemed Bhattacharyya Award for their pioneering partnership.

Launched in 2019 to honour the late Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya — founder of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), University of Warwick — the award recognises long-term, impactful collaboration between academia and industry, and celebrates the projects that help make our world a better, more sustainable place.

The award is a testament to the commitment of both the University and Tata Group to pushing boundaries, driving innovation, and delivering high-level research, whilst helping secure the future of UK industry globally.
