WMG March 2026 recap

Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) strengthened its regional, national and global relationships throughout March, meeting MPs, international university representatives, and business leaders.

The meetings highlight WMG’s crucial role in bridging the gap between academia and industry, as well as its strong commitment to collaboration and innovation.

British Science Week: Discovering the wonders of STEM

British Science Week made a triumphant return this year, with the Outreach and Widening Participation team at WMG delivering a host of inspiring events and activities to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in children across Coventry and beyond. Working closely with colleagues across the University, including Warwick’s Widening Participation team, WMG Outreach delivered ten events — from school visits and hands-on workshops to teacher training — that engaged more than 2,300 students from over 40 schools.

In February, representatives from Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) met with MPs; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) leaders; and international guests, including colleagues from the PNB Research Institute in Singapore and Osaka University in Japan.

Celebrating women and girls in science

In celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science (Wednesday 11 February 2026), the Outreach and Widening Participation team at WMG hosted a special event at Coventry Transport Museum to encourage young women to pursue science. Over 180 female students from local primary and secondary schools came together to discover and celebrate the achievements of women, past and present, who have helped forge a path for today’s scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Unlocking careers in engineering: WMG’s Industry Day

With 20% of the UK’s engineering workforce due to retire within the next five years, and the Government predicting that 1.9 million STEM professionals will be needed within the next decade, nurturing young talent has never been more important. Industry Day at WMG returned for its fourth consecutive year to help do just that.

Delivered by WMG’s Outreach and Widening Participation team, the event is designed to spark interest in engineering careers in children aged 11 to 14.

Bringing STEM to life for the engineers of tomorrow

Staff and students at WMG, University of Warwick, came together to celebrate Tomorrow’s Engineers Week by sharing their inspiring STEM experiences.

Running from 10 to 14 November, Tomorrow’s Engineers Week is an annual campaign bringing together the engineering community to challenge perceptions and highlight the breadth of careers available in the sector.

Organised by EngineeringUK, the week-long celebration aims to inspire young people by showcasing real-life stories from engineers and technicians. This year’s theme was “Dare to Discover.”

The WMG Outreach team worked alongside colleagues from the University’s School of Engineering, Social Inclusion and Widening Participation team, and Student Project teams — including Warwick Fighting Robots; Warwick Racing; Warwick Rail; Warwick Submarine; Warwick Moto; and Warwick Harvest — as well as JLR and Tata Motors, Waste2Race and Warwick Bearing.

Sparking curiosity outside the classroom

The Outreach team at WMG has been busy bringing science to life in London as part of the Royal Institution (Ri)’s holiday workshop programme. Designed for ages nine to 14, the workshops provide young people with hands-on experience of STEM topics, helping expand their learning beyond the classroom.

This is the fourth consecutive year that WMG has delivered sessions in partnership with the Ri, expertly led by Professor Margaret Low, Director of Outreach and Widening Participation, and Dr Phil Jemmett, Widening Participation Coordinator and Faculty Public Engagement Lead (Science, Engineering and Medicine).

Nurturing the STEM stars of tomorrow

The WMG Outreach team at University of Warwick was delighted to welcome a brand-new cohort of students for its Work Experience Week this summer (Monday 7 July to Friday 11 July). Launched in 2019, the annual event – which is organised by WMG Outreach and the University’s Widening Participation team – aims to foster inclusivity in engineering by giving students from under-represented backgrounds the chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and explore what a career in STEM could look like.

Celebrating British Science Week

Staff and students from across WMG at the University of Warwick had another busy, fun-packed British Science Week, taking part in a total of 11 special STEM events reaching out to more than 1,500 young scientists, teachers, and families.

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths running from 7-16 March.

WMG staff and students joined the Outreach Team at the University of Warwick’s Resonate Festival of Science and Technology; led science workshops at schools and held the Royal Institution (Ri) Engineering Masterclasses and celebration events.

The Resonate Festival of Science and Technology welcomed over 500 people. Here the WMG team ran ‘Inventors, Explorers and Engineers’, which featured a robot maze; a robot vehicle battle arena; coding workshops; a controllable model train system and more.

West Midlands students introduced to STEM careers

On Wednesday (12th February), the WMG Outreach Team hosted an Engineering Industry Day at the Degree Apprenticeship Centre, at The University of Warwick.

The team welcomed over 100 Year 8 and 9 students from across the West Midlands, including those from Barr’s Hill School, Eden Girls School, Yardleys School, Harris C of E Academy and West Coventry Academy.

The event aimed to inspire students from groups under-represented in STEM to consider careers in engineering ahead of them choosing their GCSE subjects.

This project was led by Marie Diebolt, the Outreach Project Officer on the High Value Manufacturing Catapult Inspiring Young Engineers project. The project aims to foster a positive culture of engineering in young people and create the future engineering workforce.

On the day, students were welcomed by Professor Kerry Kirwan who encouraged them to reflect on what their career path might look like. They met employers from various engineering sectors including Ramboll, JLR, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, Legacy Manufacturing Solutions Limited, Capgemini, and SAP, and WMG apprentices.
