Dr Emma Williams has been re-appointed as Interim Co-Editor of the Journal of Philosophy of Education (JOPE) for 2021/22. The journal is now in its 55th year, and is a premier journal in philosophy of education. JOPE was first established and edited by R.S. Peters. Mental Health in Education: New Perspectives from Philosophy

Colloquium 17 June 2020, University of Warwick

The University of Warwick is hosting a one-day colloquium, jointly funded by the British Academy and the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, to explore therapeutic philosophical traditions in light of educational issues, and in response to calls by policy makers that schools should be teaching about mental health. Philosophers, psychoanalysts and education researchers will bring their experience and expertise to the conversation. There will be a special focus on Wittgenstein and Stanley Cavell.

Speakers: Josh Cohen (Goldsmiths), Richard Gipps (Oxford), Joanna Moncrieff (UCL), Adrian Skilbeck (IOE/Winchester), Paul Standish (IOE), Emma Williams (Warwick), and ‘in conversation’ with Adam Phillips (psychoanalyst and writer).

Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

There is no fee for attending the colloquium. Lunch will be provided.

Is philosophy therapeutic, and can it help promote good mental health in secondary schools?

Dr Emma Williams (Associate Professor, Education Studies) has been awarded a British Academy/Leverhulme grant to examine the perceived mental health crisis in young people, and whether philosophy can help to promote wider understandings of mental health in schools. Her project will result in a series of podcasts that examine concepts such as ‘anxiety’ and ‘perfectionism’ using philosophical perspectives.

Williams’ research will develop the ideas of the American philosopher Stanley Cavell (1926-2018), who proposed a conception of philosophy as the ‘education of grownups.’ Her 18-month project will commence in March 2020. A series of interdisciplinary workshops for researchers working at the intersections of education, therapy and philosophy will be running at Warwick. The Philosophy of Education of Great Britain Annual Conference will be held from 31st March-2nd April at New College, Oxford. CES Assistant Professor Dr Emma Williams is a keynote speaker at the conference along with with Professor James Tooley (Newcastle University, UK) and Professor Jan Masschelein, (University of Leuven, Belgium). Dr Emma Willaims will be exploring ideas from her book 'The Ways We Think' in relation to the kind of thinking that can and should be 'common' to schools today.

Philosophy, Literature and Education: A seminar series funded by the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain.

Wednesday 17th February, Scarman House, University of Warwick (13.00-17.00).

Introductions by Professor David Bakhurst (Queens) and Professor Christine Sypnowich (Queens).

This invitation only seminar seeks to explore the educational potential of philosophy and literature from interdisciplinary perspectives. Themes to be examined include 'Learning from Philosophy and Literature' and 'Lessons from Dystopia'. The seminar builds upon questions that emerged in the first seminar (held at the University of Oxford, December 2015) and anticipates themes to be examined in the final seminar, which will be held at the British Academy in March 2016.
