IER researchers present GIG-OSH findings at Creating Sustainable Work Conference 2025

IER researchers presented their papers at the Creating Sustainable Work Conference 2025, held in Stockholm, Sweden from 7-9 May 2025, including findings from a project focusing on the occupational health and safety of gig workers (GIG OSH). The conference brought together experts and stakeholders to explore sustainable work practices and their implications for worker wellbeing and policy development.

Two years of ReWAGE - providing expertise to inform work and employment policy

Since being launched in July 2021 ReWAGE has been incredibly productive – our experts have produced 40 evidence papers and policy briefings and responded to 8 major consultations.

The group’s outputs have been covered in the national, regional and specialist media, and its co-chairs and experts have presented at national conferences and forums, and to government ministers at a wide range of meetings, including all-party parliamentary groups.

Praise for new IER report on measuring green jobs in Scotland

A report from IER on defining and measuring green jobs for Skills Development Scotland has won praise. At the recent launch of the report, the Scottish Government was congratulated for adopting the ideas proposed by the IER team, which was led by Dr Jeisson Cardenas Rubio and included colleagues from Strathclyde University.

Quality (and lack) of employment linked to mental health-related disability

A new article was published in the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health by Rebeka Balogh, Sudipa Sarkar, Chris Warhurst and colleagues at Interface Demography at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Karolinska Institute.

The article examines the link between types of employment trajectories and Belgium workers having a subsequent registered disability from mental health.

ReWAGE launched

ReWAGE – Renewing Work Advisory Group of Experts – has launched. Hosted by IER with the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) at Leeds University, it is an expert advisory group to support the government’s strategic response to the recovery and renewal of work and employment in the UK post-Covid. It will sit into 2022.

It will produce evidence papers, policy briefings and reports for government on specialist topics important for maintaining existing jobs, creating new and better jobs and ensuring a return to a well-functioning labour market. Contact ReWAGE for more information.

New Futuretrack Reports: Ten Years On - and the impact of the pandemic on graduate careers

The publication of the Futuretrack Stage 5 study conducted in 2019, led by Professors Peter Elias and Kate Purcell and funded by the Nuffield Foundation, showed ‘how the majority of graduates had by then achieved reasonable job security, with many balancing work and parenting or other caring roles when the pandemic hit’ (see press release). In 2020, the research team went back to respondents to investigate how they had been affected by the Covid restrictions and economic impact and conducted Futuretrack Stage 6.
